Description

Facilities Services- Planning and Construction invites applications for a Campus Architect to join an exciting design team in beautiful Missoula, Montana. You will provide full in-house architectural design services and cost estimating for new, remodel and maintenance type projects on UM-Campus & affiliate campuses.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise third party contractors in the construction of campus projects
  • Engage campus stake-holders, faculty, students and general public as required to solicit design ideas and comments and present projects to various campus committees for approvals at key project phases
  • Work with City of Missoula permitting policies and Fire Marshall’s office as well as conformance with State of Montana, Board of Regents and Commissioner of Higher Education’s policies and procedures
  • Work with the State Historic Preservation Office on all campus heritage properties being remodeled and/or added to
  • Maintain and file project communication, budgets, drawings and specifications, completion and Operation Manual files
  • Prepare and submit Project Authority requests to the Board of Regents, Commissioner’s Office and State A/E office for projects
  • Prepare and maintain the list of projects required for the biennial Long-Range Building Program (LRBP)
  • Be a leader in advocating high design and aesthetic standards for the overall campus infrastructure
  • Oversee, supervise and manage work load of staff and provide technical direction to staff on building codes, design, finishes, specifications and details
  • Maintain & update campus maps in AutoCad to reflect changes made to underground utilities, tunnels, sidewalks, grounds and buildings
  • Develop and maintain CAD standards for drawings done in-house using Autocad software
  • Maintain and update the Campus Design Standards in coordination with other Planning, Design and Construction staff, Facilities trades and custodial supervisors and UM engineers
  • Prepare schematic and construction drawings, cost estimates and specifications for construction projects for campus departments as required. Also provide contract administration for these projects
  • Maintain electronic file management and archiving of completed campus projects on facilities servers
  • Direct supervision over staff members and assists in managing the workload of PDC staff
  • Other duties assigned by the Associate Director of Planning, Design and Construction
Minimum Qualifications
  • Accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture and five (5) years of post-graduation experience in an architectural design office or public institution setting
  • Possess a Montana architects license or ability to obtain license within six (6) months of accepting this position
  • Experience using AutoCad for at least five (5) years including the latest version of AutoCad.
  • Be LEED certified or similar Green Building certification or ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of accepting position
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Bluebeam and Acrobat
  • Be familiar with design-bid-build and alternative delivery methods like GCCM, Design-Build, Public-Private-Partnerships
  • Be familiar with Mass Timber construction
  • Knowledge on IBC Building Code, ADAAG standards, Energy Code, LEED or similar Green standards, basic mechanical, electrical and plumbing code.
  • Exceptional planning skills and construction knowledge
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and plans to the campus community is essential
  • Experience with architectural concepts, practices, procedures, construction documents, specifications, materials and construction practices
  • Experience managing approval process through local municipalities. Full understanding and working knowledge of construction practices, building and life/safety codes for compliance
  • Execute projects using off-campus contractors and Facilities Services shops and provide design drawings and documents that clearly communicate the projects intent.
  • Ability to prepare cost estimates for construction projects of various sizes
  • Assist with LRBP projects, FCI reports and major deferred maintenance items on campus. Ability to inspect campus buildings and other infrastructures and identify defects and propose remedial action
  • Takes a leadership role in project development
  • Ability to multi-task, communicate with excellent written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills, problem-solving abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree and/or ten (10) years of work experience as an architect and/or facilities administrator
  • Revit experience
  • Knowledge of Board of Regents construction policies and procedures as well as State of Montana rules, policies and procedures regarding construction projects
  • Ability to use Sketchup or other 3D modelling software
Additional Information

Position Number: 084330
Compensation Title: Architect II
Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year
Probationary Period: Six months minimum
