The Department of Surgery is seeking a Research
Assistant to assists with research studies in the Division
of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
The candidate will be part of a research team working on biological
therapies for cardiac arrhythmias. We are looking for a
self-motivated, detailed oriented person to join our team. This
person would be involved in animal care and technical procedures
under the direction and supervision of a PhD.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists in animal surgeries and clinical care.
- Monitors status of experimental animals.
- Maintains laboratory spaces, completes all necessary documentation, and ensures compliance with all standards and regulations.
- Maintain and ensure equipment is up to date and in good working condition, such as swine anesthesia and euthanasia carts.
- Assist in animal transport between facilities.
- Maintain departmental procedures and protocols regarding humane care and treatment of animals.
- Ensures that proper procedures are observed including the humane handling, care and euthanasia of experimental animals.
- Develops and maintains records of research activities, and prepares periodic and ad hoc reports, as required by investigators and/or regulatory bodies.
- Attends and participates in training programs as assigned.
- Computer literacy with proficient use of programs including Microsoft Office programs, email, Internet, and database management software to efficiently accomplish work.
- Maintain communication with veterinarians about animal care and treatment.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
- Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $17.20 - $30.30 HRLY ($47,000 targeted;
Commensurate with experience)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
