Description

The Clinical Preceptor provides direct supervision of groups of BSN nursing students within the clinical environment. The Clinical Preceptor delivers the clinical activities developed by the School of Nursing (SON) faculty through the program curriculum design. The Clinical Preceptor helps in the development of the student’s clinical knowledge, skills and behaviors through direct supervision of skills at the clinical site. The Clinical Preceptor fosters an environment to support critical thinking and clinical judgment. The Clinical Preceptor participates in holistic student performance assessment by providing formative and summative feedback to the student and to the SON faculty about student performance using standardized student assessments.

Examples of Duties

Candidates with demonstrated expertise and professional experience in the following are encouraged to apply:

• Participate in all clinical orientations and educational events at both Husson University SON and the assigned clinical site.
• Supervise directly a group of BSN nursing students’ clinical work in an assigned clinical setting in accordance with the learning outcomes of the assigned clinical course, relevant professional standards/guidelines and the policies of both the program and clinical site.
• Provide feedback to students during the clinical experience about performance of skills,
behavior and attitudes using standardized clinical feedback forms.
• Conduct pre-and post-clinical conferences using the course learning activity assignment
outlined for each clinical day.
• Monitor student performance of clinical skills at the assigned clinical site with emphasis
on patient safety.
• Provide Director of Clinical Education and SON course faculty feedback about individual
student performance for inclusion in mid-term and final performance assessment.
• Complete scoring of daily clinical activities within the SON’s learning management
system (CANVAS) using provided performance based rubrics and/or scoring tools as
provided in the course.
• Notify and communicate with the Director of Clinical Education any areas within the
student assessment(s) that indicate need for improvement in knowledge, skills or
attitudes within the clinical setting.
• Complete the end of semester clinical evaluation in collaboration with the Director of
Clinical Education for each student in the clinical group.
• Report any student absences, injuries or illnesses during the clinical experience to the
Director of Clinical Education

Typical Qualifications

• Active RN license to practice in the State of Maine
• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree with Master’s degree and/or certification in area of
preceptorship preferred
• Minimum of 1 year active clinical practice required with preferred of 3 years of active
clinical practice

*Rate is dependent upon the number of students enrolled in the course assigned.
