Job Details
Carleton College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology (tenure track) beginning September 1, 2025. Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
We seek an emerging scholar with a strong background in teaching cultural musicology and related subjects to undergraduates in a liberal arts setting. We are open to ethnomusicologists working in any cultural area or tradition whose research interests will complement the methodologies and expertise of the other members of the department.
Carleton values faculty scholarship and research and supports these through a variety of internal funding opportunities, including sabbatical leaves every three years, additional internal grants, and startup funds. Carleton's grants office assists faculty in applying for external funding (e.g., NEH, ACLS, Fulbright, etc.).
Carleton faculty teach five courses over three ten-week terms per year. Teaching duties for this position will involve courses in our music major curriculum, including a core course in ethnomusicology and an upper level seminar(s) in the candidate’s area(s) of interest, as well as introductory and intermediate level courses directed at the general student population. We seek candidates who will be able to forge teaching connections with other departments on campus, and we are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body in a liberal arts context.
Candidates should have a PhD in Ethnomusicology or Musicology with an appropriate subfield, and should have their degree in hand before the position begins on September 1, 2025.
Candidates should submit the following materials: a cover letter; a curriculum vitae; and a description (2-3 pages) of a course or a course unit that would engage students from diverse backgrounds in an undergraduate, residential liberal arts environment. After passing through an initial screening process, applicants may receive a request for scholarly materials and contact information for three references. All application materials can be submitted here. Review of applications will begin November 25, 2024 and continue until the position is filled.
Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000. Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or access to its educational facilities and activities.
Company
Carleton College is committed to providing a true liberal arts education—a curriculum that challenges our students to learn broadly and think deeply. Instead of training for one narrow career path, Carleton students develop the knowledge and skills to succeed in any walk of life.
The most important thing our students gain is how to learn for a lifetime. Critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, effective communication: these are the tools that transform a collection of facts and figures into a way of understanding the world. Learn more about academic life at Carleton.
Carleton’s faculty members are highly respected scholars, researchers, and practitioners in their fields. But above all, their first priority is teaching.
Every course at Carleton is taught by a professor—not a teaching assistant—in classes small enough to offer individual attention for our students. A student-faculty ratio of 9 to 1 ensures that Carleton students have plenty of opportunity for interaction with their professors.
Carleton’s student body is notoriously difficult to categorize, but if we had to choose just one word to describe them, it would be curious. They’re an intellectually insatiable group that approaches learning with enthusiasm, energy, and a uniquely Carleton brand of playfulness. Broad-ranging interests are common, and friendships seem to cross all traditional boundaries.
When people visit Carleton, they’re often surprised by the warmth and closeness of the campus community. Somehow they expect a leading liberal arts college to feel more formidable and competitive.
But as our students and alumni will tell you, there’s just something different about Carleton. Maybe it’s our small size. Or maybe it’s the round-the-clock proximity of so many creative minds.
Whatever the reason, Carleton is a place where students are likelier to cooperate than compete — and where working hard doesn’t mean forgetting how to play.
Carleton strives to be a collaborative community that encourages curiosity and intellectual adventure of the highest quality. Faculty, staff, and students respect one another for the serious work and the playful humor we share, and we support each other in pursuing a healthy balance of mind, body, and spirit.
We encourage our faculty and staff to take advantage of the following financial, wellness, community and learning & development perks to make the most of our resources, and to become involved in our community.
