Job Description
This position exists to support M State students in achieving academic success through tutoring, library and proctoring services. The position provides support and learning services and activities which are intended to increase student persistence and completion for all populations of M State students.
Responsibilities
- On a daily basis, live the mission, vision and values of M
State to ensure a positive experience for all students and
stakeholders. Service to M State students and stakeholders is a
core component of the position and work responsibilities.
- Support students with acquiring skills toward independence in
their learning. Provide support for navigating D2L. Identify, hire,
and train student employees to support the libraries. Support the
college in aligning tutoring services and best practices to the
College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) requirements for
certification(s). Participate in the development of a supplemental
instruction model to embed student peer tutors in courses with high
levels of failure and withdrawal. Establish and coordinate group
study sessions. Provide tutoring support and/or resource referrals
for students. Work with faculty and staff to problem solve and
create academic support programming for students. Provide virtual
workshops for specific disciplines in collaboration with faculty.
Perform outreach to online learners to determine and make available
resources to support online student learning.
- Support students in identifying and accessing reputable
resources and materials. Support students in using the library
resources. Assist college librarian in ensuring an organized
collection and successfully functioning circulation desk. Partner
with faculty to develop opportunities for collaboration and
engagement to support student learning. Utilize library software to
support students’ research needs. Develop and maintain
comprehensive library guides to support specific courses and
programs. Develop and maintain a comprehensive repository of online
resources to support students with accessing items in an as-needed,
when-needed manner.
- Support for campus and college operations. Recognition of broad
and varied professional responsibilities which include but are not
limited to support for campus and college operations such as: front
desk coverage, registration events, Spartan Welcome Days,
Commencement, this is not an exhaustive list. Support the operation
of college and campus Student Services operational area(s) beyond
Student Affairs. Serve on campus, college and community committees
as assigned, approved and appropriate that seek to enhance the
student experience. Other related duties as assigned by Director of
Student Experience.
- Support college-wide efforts to ensure high-quality academic
support. Proctor tests for placement testing, online learners and
students with accessibility resources needs. Participate in the
development of marketing and advertising plans to support
recruitment of student employees and peer tutors for the academic
success center operation. Support and participate in the ongoing
monitoring and assessment of services provided for continuous
improvement. Support and participate in college-wide efforts to
reduce the equity gap in student learner success.
- Associate or higher degree in related area (communications,
writing, reading, speech, and/or mathematics); AND
- One academic year of teaching/tutoring experience at the high
school level or above; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and work
experience.
- Experience with a CRM (customer relationship management
system)
- Experience working with college students
- A commitment to supporting students where they are and
providing accurate information and appropriate alternatives in a
timely, thorough, friendly/courteous, respectful, and professional
manner.
- Able to operate personal computers, use various software and
web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to
locate catalog information, educational resources, word-process
documents, complete forms and prepare reports.
- Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing
sufficient to determine and respond to the informational and
backgrounds; to train, direct and evaluate work of student
employees and to assist the professional library staff to maintain
the library collection according to library policy and
procedures.
- Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and
standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in
locating materials and conducting research.
- Ability to apply and support detailed coding or cataloging
systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print
library acquisitions and locate and replace existing
materials.
- 40 hours per week from mid August through mid May with reduced
summer hours (30 hours/week) for 8 weeks of summer courses.
