Job Summary
The Classification and Compensation Analyst in the Department of Human Resources provides consultation on compensation issues, maintains classification policies, procedures and programs, reviews and approves classification and compensation requests, and analyzes data to ensure alignment with divisional and institutional goals on total cash compensation. This position is a key contact for HR employees, colleagues, and/or campus partners regarding compensation and classification policies, program interpretations, and best practices. The position primarily supports processing for classification and compensation actions to support HR professionals at UWM.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Provides consultation regarding compensation issues and program
direction, and ensures compensation policies and procedures are
maintained and aligned with industry best practices and
organizational vision
- Audits wage information to ensure fair and legal compensation practices
- Oversee compliance with FLSA regulations, in conjunction with the Strategic Classification and Compensation Specialist and the HR Compliance Officer
- Receives, reviews, and approves classification and compensation
adjustments and new entries; and ensures adherence to existing
policies and procedures
- Review and approve non-merit, performance, and temporary adjustments, and overloads
- Conduct preliminary analysis of title reviews escalated for Class and Comp Review
- Conduct spot audits and recommend process changes to ensure appropriate application of HR, UW System, State, and Federal policy and regulations
- Creates and reviews standard job descriptions in alignment with
the established organizational structure and approved methodology
- Provide support related to titling determinations and reviews
- Maintains classification structure and support titling initiatives
- Maintains accurate job descriptions for positions within the organization and ensures alignment with job duties performed.
- Serves as unit liaison to human resources staff providing
organizational information, reviewing data, and recommending
solutions for complex pay scenarios in accordance with established
policies, procedures regulations, and applicable laws
- Develop organizational competency in classification and compensation issues
- Conduct compensation and market analyses to advise HR Business Partners and leaders
- Participates in salary surveys and conducts classification and compensation studies of market data, reviews current practices, and recommends improvements to leadership to align with strategic initiatives and objectives
- Contributes to the planning, development, and implementation of strategic compensation and classification initiatives and objectives
- Works on the regular maintenance of the compensation program
taking initiative to evaluate its effectiveness, achievement of
goals, budgetary aspects, etc., and recommend improvements to
leadership where necessary
- Recommend changes to salary administration and specific compensation programs based on observed trends
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of HR experience obtained through a formal education program or professional work experience
- Experience working with productivity software such as Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, and statutes related to compensation and HR
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in HR or related field by date of hire
- Advanced knowledge of compensation principles as evidenced by specific experience in a Compensation Analyst/Specialist role or CCP (Certified Compensation Professional) certification
- Experience navigating and running reports in an HRIS system
- Experience with reporting and data analysis
- Experience working in higher education, government, or other complex organization
