Job Description

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Assistant Manager is a member of the NAU EHS Team. The Assistant Manager works closely with department leaders and supervisors to develop work unit specific safety solutions and safety training. Under the supervision of the EHS Assistant Director, Occupational Safety, this position exists to aid in fulfilling the EHS mission to the University by coordinating department safety programs and creating a positive campus safety culture. The nature of the work is to develop and deliver a full spectrum of environmental and occupational health and safety training, work practices, and procedures to enhance the overall health and safety of NAU employees, and to promote regulatory compliance in occupational safety. This position is also responsible for contributing to the department's efforts in development and delivering safety training programs and assisting departments with Job Hazard Assessments (JHA's).

Inspection - 25%
  • Perform routinely scheduled and customer responsive equipment inspections for campus equipment that is monitored by EHS for condition or safety.
  • Conduct shop/department safety inspections and work with clients to develop Job Hazard Assessments, hazard controls, or corrective measures for noted safety deficiencies.

Training - 25%
  • Organize, promote, coordinate, or deliver specific training for required occupational safety subjects, including instruction on new/better work methods or procedures, changes in safety regulations, work policies and safety codes.
  • Develop new in person or electronic training content as necessary for live or asynchronous online delivery to clients.

Program Support - 20%
  • Support various NAU EHS occupational and general safety programs and connect clients with available safety personnel, resources, and provide technical program services when needed or assigned

Project Support - 10%
  • Coordinate/collaborate with campus stakeholders for general project assistance or technical services for safety related components of campus projects.

Analysis - 10%
  • Participate in investigations to determine root cause of accidents/incidents and make recommendations for next steps or preventive measures.
  • Review OSHA recordkeeping compliance as needed.

Safety Generalist - 5%
  • Provide generalized department support and coverage

Other duties as assigned - 5%
  • Cross-department collaboration, committee participation


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in an applicable field
  • 1-2 years of relevant safety, training, or inspection experience.
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above educational Minimum Requirements.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Customer service experience or training.
  • Familiarity with construction and maintenance equipment and principles for the purpose of inspecting and evaluating work areas and activities for safety concerns.
  • Competence and experience with Microsoft Office suite of programs, Zoom, Teams, and other communication and presentation programs used for remote delivery of training.
  • Current certification as a safety professional in a relevant discipline through BCSP, ASSP, ABIH or a similar organization.
  • OSHA 10- or 30-hour certification
  • NSC Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC) or Manager of Environmental Safety & Health (MESH)
  • OSHA Specialist in Safety & Health (SSH) or Certificate Safety & Health Official (CSHO) certificate

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $54,779 - $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
