Job Summary

The assistant vice president (AVP) of advancement is responsible for overseeing the advancement and fundraising functions of the University, including recordkeeping, reporting, and compliance. The AVP maintain relationships with current and potential donors and serves as a liaison between the Advancement office and other University divisions.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

The intent of this job description is to provide a representation of the types of duties and level of responsibility that will be required of positions given this title. Job Responsibilities and Execution
  • Oversees daily operations of the Advancement office, including the office’s policies and procedures
  • Develops all aspects of fundraising operations, including content, format and logistics; coordinates with external organizations to seek support for fundraising events
  • Implements new fundraising techniques and develops marketing and communication materials for campaigns and major gift initiatives
  • Maintains a personal portfolio of 25-50 donor prospects and monitors the preparation and routing of the donor agreement review and approval process
  • Oversees capital campaign reporting to the chairman of the committee as well as to the board of directors’ Fundraising and Advancement Committee; collaborates with appropriate personnel to track gifts and ensure grant compliance
  • Serves as a liaison between the fiscal and information technology divisions of the University
Leadership and Strategic Thinking
  • Establishes long- and short-term strategic goals based on assessment data and ensures standards for the department and its field are met or exceeded
  • Adapts and modifies leadership based on new information and/or data; works to set and unite people on the new direction
  • Utilizes effective strategies to build collaboration for maximum execution
  • Aligns division/department purpose and actions with relevant University initiatives and higher education trends
  • Manages budget, personnel, prospect research, and proposal development
  • Provides management and oversight of marginal and major gifts, corporate and foundation gifts, planned gifts, and annual fund gifts
  • Maintains relationships with current and potential donors
Employee Management and Development
  • Supports the mission of the University and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
  • Models, supports, and holds others accountable to the University’s values
  • Recruits, interviews, recommends, welcomes, observes, and monitors performance of department staff
  • Sets clear performance expectations and holds employees accountable
  • Conducts annual employee evaluations based on evidence, observation, and feedback
  • Manages human resources reporting for the department, including time keeping and other personnel matters
  • Determines metrics used to evaluate performance of advancement officers

Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in non-profit advancement or annual giving
  • Master’s degree preferred

  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge fundraising software

  • Strong professional integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to understand and implement general principles of accounting and best practices in gift management
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, students, community, and media partners
