General Information:

Seeking a Special Advisor, Health Promoting Campus Initiatives to lead James Madison University efforts as a Health Promoting University (HPU). This position will support the systems/settings work of the President's Council for Health and Wellbeing and the Associate Vice President for Health and Well-being. The President's Council for Health and Well-being serves as a diverse forum for input and discussion that influences a path forward to a new vision for health and well-being; provides direction for planning efforts of work teams, identifying best practice; and engenders enthusiasm and dissemination of the vision to all constituents. The guiding principles of our work are set forth in the Okanagan Charter, an internationally adopted charter for aspiring HPUs. 7 (ubc.ca)

The Special Advisor will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Health and Well-Being, with campus wide responsibilities through the President's Council for Health and Well-being. The successful candidate will have demonstrated 1) knowledge of wellbeing practices 2) project management and planning skills, 3) relationship and collaboration skills, 4) assessment, evaluation, and data analysis skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serve as the university's lead expert on Health Promoting Campus work. Includes:

• Staying up to date on the latest evidence based best practice. (Continuous review of relevant literature, textbooks, presentations and learning from other experts in the field.)
• Representing the university at bi-monthly national network meetings.
• Using critical thinking to identify best practice gaps and independent judgement to recommend change at both department and campus wide levels.
• Advise AVP and President's Council for Health and Wellbeing on policies and decisions, embedding health into all aspects of campus culture.

2. A key call to action for Health Promoting Campuses is to: "Embed health into all aspects of campus culture, across the administration, operations and academic mandates." As such this position will:

• Map (link) current university programs, services, and policies, to the JMU definition of wellbeing, JMU wellbeing model and Okanagan Charter Calls to Action. This is an extensive, ongoing process that reaches across all aspects of the university.
• Based on the mapping process, use critical thinking and independent judgement to identify university gaps in programs, services and policies.
• Use knowledge as a content expert to recommend changes to policy at the departmental and university wide levels.
• Advise AVP, Health and Wellbeing, President's Council and University Leadership (AVPs, VPs, Deans, President, etc.) on policy change and decisions related to Health Promoting Campus work.

3. Develop collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders:

• Across campus (including relationships at all levels of the university. Examples: building relationships with FM and dining around sustainability and working with senior level administrators on recommended policy change).
• Within the local community (including serving on the steering committee for the Rockingham/Harrisonburg Healthy Community Collaboration Healthy Community Collaborative | Learn More | Harrisonburg.) This role includes at least bi-monthly meetings).
• Within the US Health Promoting Campus Network U.S. Health Promoting Campuses Network (ushpcn.org). Includes bi-monthly meetings as stated above, as well as yearly summit participation.
• Within the International Health Promoting Campus Network — IHPCN (healthpromotingcampuses.org). Attending meetings, summits, etc. As appropriate (this year the summit is a review/edit of the international charter and will be held in Ireland).
• Utilize relationships to identify shared values, best practice, practice gaps and solutions for positive change.
• Use strong communication skills to develop above relationships and to dissemination JMU's Health Promoting • Campus work across campus, locally, nationally and globally.

4. Serve as project manager for Health Promoting Campus initiatives.

• Plan and facilitate bi-annual full President's Council meetings.
• Plan and facilitate President's Council monthly steering committee meetings.
• Serve as co-chair of Okanagan Charter Working group with weekly initiative work, monthly co-chair meetings and monthly full working group meetings.
• Assist President's Council co-chairs (currently AVP, Health and Wellbeing and Dean, Libraries) with meeting preparation and special initiative work (an example of initiative work can be found here The JED Foundation - JMU.
• Identify resources to initiatives, including identifying and applying for potential grant funding.
• Attend university, community and national meetings on behalf of the President's Council Co-chairs.
• Serve as advisor to all working groups within the President's Council (currently JED, communications, Okanagan Charter and Balanced Dukes faculty/staff working groups).

5. Work across campus to identify, design, facilitate, data implement data collection specifically related to Well-being and Health Promoting Campus Work.

• This is a large campus-wide effort which requires working closely with campus partners including CARS, PAIR and SA IT.
• Coordinating campus-wide data collection around student flourishing, withdrawal rates and faculty/staff wellbeing.
• Working with IT experts using Medicat, CMR and other systems to create a data lake for health/wellbeing data. • Once collected this data will be used to measure the success of health promoting campus work and identify gaps for improvement.
• Partner with community entities to explore data collection (to include 911 and Emergency Department visit data).
• Continuously advocate for data collection related to health/wellbeing.

6. Work with campus experts in CARS and PAIR to analysis data related to Health Promoting Campus work.

• Use data to update President's Council co-chairs and University Leaders on Health Promoting Campus efforts.
• Create data reports, graphics and presentations to disseminate findings across campus and beyond.
• Design, coordinate, and implement focus groups related to specific President's Council Initiatives and other efforts as appropriate.

7. Health Promoting Campuses acknowledge the importance of our surroundings and physical space to our wellbeing. JMU is implementing multiple types of wellbeing spaces which are innovative and currently being researched for effectiveness in IHEs. Examples include The Living Room Spaces for Students - JMU; Spaces for Students - JMU and our newly installed Sensory Room in EnGeo. These spaces are quickly gaining attention and a request for further spaces is increasing. This position would:

• Coordinate the set-up of these spaces (including working content experts on design, ordering and physically putting items into place).
• Provide oversight of the spaces. (Includes identifying primary keepers of the spaces. Routine maintenance. Scheduling needs)

Qualifications:

Required:

• Master's degree in Public Health, Health Promotion, Psychology or a related field and four (4) years of related experience.

OR

• Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Health Promotion, Psychology or a related field and six (6) years of related experience is required.

Note: Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirements.
Preferred:

• Knowledge of wellbeing practices
• Project management and planning skills
• Relationship and collaboration skills
• Assessment, evaluation, and data analysis skills.
