Job Description

Virginia Tech seeks to fill a three year, non tenure-track, academic year appointment, Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice Position in the area of Biochemistry with an anticipated start date of 26th August 2024. Working in collaboration with the department's other faculty members, the Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice will take a lead role on enhancing the curriculum for Biochemistry majors and promoting teaching excellence. The candidate is expected to bring specialized expertise to the instructional programs within Biochemistry by teaching courses, engaging in curricular updates and course transformations, enhancing undergraduate research and/or outreach opportunities, and the adoption/integration of innovative and inclusive pedagogy. The candidate is expected to remain current in biochemistry and related fields, and to serve on departmental, college, or university committees as a contributing member of the department and the broader university community. Individuals with interests and skills in both biochemistry and the interface between natural and human systems are strongly encouraged to apply. The position's responsibilities include: classroom and online instruction, involvement in curricular innovation and transformation, engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning in Biochemistry, mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and identities, continuing development of professional capabilities and scholarly activities; participation in department, college, and university governance; and professional service, enhancing experiential learning opportunities in Biochemistry.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Biochemistry or related Life Science disciplines; Experience in higher education instruction and pedagogy activities with strong promise for being a leader in the instructional mission; Demonstrated effectiveness in undergraduate teaching and strong potential for graduate teaching; Commitment to teach and advise a diverse student body.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Biochemistry; Documented research achievements, as might be demonstrated through a postdoctoral or previous faculty appointment; Vision, creativity, and leadership skills relevant to instruction; Demonstrated effectiveness in mentoring undergraduate research students.
