Job Details
The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation is currently accepting applications for the part-time position of Assistant Coach – Strength & Conditioning (part-time) . The successful candidate will understand the mission of Swarthmore College, the role that intercollegiate athletics plays to support it, and will possess a record of successful leadership, preferably as a head/assistant coach. The Assistant Coach will help coordinate various aspects of the program as determined by the head coach.
As a member of the Department of Athletics, Physical Education, & Recreation, the Assistant Coach – Strength & Conditioning (part-time) will assist the Director of Sports Performance with all facets of the program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to designing and instructing comprehensive and/or sport-specific strength and conditioning programs, as well as ensuring facility and equipment maintenance.
The Assistant Coach – Strength & Conditioning will support the mission and values of the college and the department, and must adhere to all institutional, Centennial Conference, and NCAA policies. This position requires working collaboratively and communicating effectively with student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Prioritizing student health, safety, and well-being are essential.
The anticipated term for this Assistant Coach – Strength & Conditioning (part-time) position would be mid-August through mid-June; exact schedule will be determined with the Head Coach.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with management of nearly 500 student-athletes for 22
varsity sports
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of students, staff, and
all participants as appropriate
- Assist in the development of strength, speed, flexibility, and
agility programs for assigned teams to enhance athletic performance
and reduce the risk of injury
- Communicate with head coaches and sports medicine staff
regarding student-athlete well-being, injury prevention and
recovery, and strength and conditioning progress
- Instruct student-athletes on proper and safe weight-lifting
techniques and assist with testing and evaluation to assess
strength and conditioning progress
- Assist with the development of off-season (winter & summer)
training programs for teams to continue training when away from
campus
- Ensure compliance with Swarthmore College, Centennial
Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations
- Assist in the daily maintenance and upkeep of the Matchbox
Fitness Center
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive
environment
- Continue professional development and education to stay abreast
of best practices
- All other duties as assigned and therefore deemed necessary and
appropriate by the head coach and/or the Director of Athletics or
his/her representative.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Health/Exercise Science or related
field
- 1-3 years of relevant experience, preferably with teams
- American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED-certified
- Current certification as a National Strength and Conditioning
Association (NSCA) Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist
(CSCS) and/or Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coach
Association (CSCCA) Strength & Conditioning Coach Certification
(SCCC)
- Ability to work a non-tradition schedule, including weekends,
as assigned
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Mastery of
the skills and strategies associated with the sport.
- Work hours may be diverse and long, including evenings,
weekends, and sometimes holidays
- This position requires the ability to sit or stand for long
periods of time and move about athletic facilities as needed
- This position requires the ability to physically demonstrate,
assist with, correct, and spot (for safety) a wide range of static
and dynamic exercises and movements.
- This position will also carry, move, and set up equipment
pertaining to job responsibilities (e.g. weights, equipment,
etc.)
