PURPOSE

The Professional Counselor is responsible for providing direct clinical case management and crisis intervention services to students needing assistance with complex mental health needs and/or basic needs utilizing culturally appropriate brief transitional counseling and triage assessment services to empower students to address immediate needs and receive timely access to relevant resources and services. The professional counselor also serves as the psychiatric services coordinator, and community referral coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Functional Area 1: Clinical Case Management

Percent Effort: 40%
  • Provide clinical case management services by meeting with and assisting students and families in locating resources to address basic and mental health needs (e.g., financial, community therapists, food insecurity, healthcare access, etc.) and assisting them with arranging referrals and navigating the referral process with appropriate follow-up.
  • Provide intensive case management and transition services ('bridge care') for students who periodically need additional services to address risk as well as students transitioning to community providers or specialists. Provide wrap-around support and contacts to ensure successful connections to referrals and continuity of care.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with other state and national clinical case managers through participation in case manager association and list serv.
  • Maintain licensure and seek continuing education opportunities relevant to the position.
  • Serve on various committees and task forces as assigned.


Functional Area 2: Triage/Crisis Intervention

Percent Effort: 35%
  • Provide triage counselor-on-duty services. Conduct client screenings and psychosocial and environmental assessment of clients, risk assessment and management. Participate in weekly case conferences and informal case consultation to coordinate client care.
  • Assist clinical staff in psychiatric hospitalization of students. Consult with faculty, staff, students, and family members, who are concerned about a student. Consult with hospital and referring clinical staff regarding discharge planning post-hospitalization.


Functional Area 3: Psychiatry Services Coordination

Percent Effort: 15%
  • Provide coordination of psychiatry services by managing psychiatry appointment schedule, maintaining psychiatry caseload database, verifying psychiatry services compliance, updating psychiatry forms as needed, communicating psychiatry services updates to staff, maintaining referral information for graduating/non-returning students, and facilitating timely discharges through appropriate documentation and planning.
  • Consult with contracted psychiatrist to address prescription related questions from clients.
  • Provide psychiatry related psychoeducation for students, faculty, and staff as needed.


Functional Area 4: Community Referral Coordination

Percent Effort: 10%
  • Serve as university and community resources liaison and coordinator by establishing and maintaining relationships with key community referral sources (e.g., community and private mental health providers, community services and hospitals, etc.).
  • Maintain and update referral and resource database(s) to maintain knowledge of parameters affecting referral options such as sliding fee options, wait times, insurances, intake procedures, etc. to share with clinical staff and campus partners as needed.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Professional Counselor I:
  • Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or other specialty related to job function.
  • Practical/field placement relevant to college counseling, or supervised experience related to job function.
  • Licensed as Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. Must maintain licensure for continued employment.


Professional Counselor II:
  • Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or other specialty related to job function.
  • Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Must maintain licensure for continued employment.
  • LPC's must have completed at least 3000 clock hours of post-licensure clinical mental health experience in no less than 18 months of supervision. LMFT's must have completed 3000 clock hours of full-time post-licensure clinical experience in no less than 24 months with 200 hours of supervision. LCSW's must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience with 100 hours of supervision and have passed their state board exam.


Other:
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to appropriately assess and treat a wide variety of clinical conditions and accurately assess risk of harm to self and/or others based on clinical evaluation and/or collateral report.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements for case managers in a counseling center agency.
  • Administrative and technological experience with Electronic Health Records.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) to be able to effectively collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three (3) or more years of post-licensure clinical and case management experience in an outpatient clinical setting.
  • Experience providing counseling services as a professional staff member in a university setting.
  • Experience in assessment and intervention of individuals with serious mental health concerns and/or a history of trauma.
  • Advanced training and experience in crisis intervention.
  • Administrative and technological experience with case management tracking system.
  • Demonstrated program coordination skills.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision to master's level counseling and psychology trainees utilizing a multiculturally competent approach.


SALARY $49,000 - $61,000 Annual approx. (Dependent upon education and experience.)
  • $4,083.34 - $5,083.34 Monthly
