The University of Montana invites applications for an Associate Dean of Students and Director of Community Standards for UM Housing .

The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Community Standards oversees and provides leadership for all activities related to the University of Montana’s student conduct and community standards program. The community standards program is a key component of the University’s student support, success and retention efforts. The Associate Dean/Director is expected to create and lead progress towards a strategic vision for the University community standards program and related policy development that is equitable, educational and restorative, grounded in current best practices and legal requirements, incorporates sanctions rooted in student wellness and restorative practices, and fosters ongoing student development and academic success.

The successful candidate will join the University at an exciting time of growth as the University reestablishes a comprehensive Dean of Students office (DOSO). The position will initially report to the Executive Director of Housing and Community Standards while working closely with both the Associate Vice President of Wellbeing/Dean of Students (AVP/DOS) and the Executive Director to finalize an intentional plan and timeline to transition reporting of the Office of Community Standards and this position from the Executive Director to the AVP/DOS within 1-2 years.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Directly supervise one (1) Assistant Director and additional administrative and case management or DOSO staff as assigned, and oversee relevant human and fiscal resources
  • Conduct research on national student behavior and support trends and participate in ongoing education with ASCA, NABITA, NACCOP, Maxient, and other relevant professional organizations, to guide current department policy and determine long term, big picture goals
  • Oversee operations and supervise main administrators for the University of the Student Conduct Codes and adjudications in collaboration with the UM Police Department and UM Housing in accordance with the University of Montana Student Conduct Code and related policies
  • Oversee coordination of student disciplinary actions with university offices such as the Curry Health Center, UM Housing, UM Police, EO/TIX, Academic Deans, Legal Counsel, and/or within university policies and processes
  • Serve as a level five Maxient Administrator and oversee database administration for campus, and additional setup and support for offices and processes using the database following the guidelines of the Maxient Level 5 and User agreement
  • Oversee Community Standards Clery compliance obligations and student conduct record protocols in compliance with university policy, FERPA, and relevant local, state, and federal laws
  • Create and manage system for identifying students in the community standards program at risk of leaving the university and develop strategies in consultation with DOS colleagues and campus partners to intervene and provide targeted student support
  • Develop and administer procedures for student group misconduct and fraternity and sorority conduct under the terms of the student code of conduct
  • Chair the admission review committee and oversee the admissions review process in collaboration with the office of Admissions
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Public Administration, Counseling, or a related field, and seven (7) years progressive experience in a community standard, student behavior, or residence life management positions, including student conduct adjudicatory experience in a higher education setting; or a combination of experience and education
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and direct experience with staff supervision, training, and development.
  • The ability to understand and utilize new technology within the office; establish, maintain, process, and update electronic and paper files, records, and documents; Microsoft Office, Maxient, Slate, or other databases, spreadsheets, etc., for data viewing, collection, and entry; and an overall understanding of the University of Montana’s mission, program, and policies.
  • Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically, and through written word.
  • Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multitasking and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little supervision.
  • Ability to formulate and enforce policies, complete departmental strategic planning, and assist with development of short-/long-term goals within the Dean of Students/Community Standards operation.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and supporting students in crisis.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively and efficiently conduct investigations related to student conduct matters.
  • Highly developed organizational skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including verbal, written, and interpersonal communications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a highly diverse contingency of faculty, administrators, staff, and students across campus.
  • Skills required to effectively work with and remain respectful and professional in dealing with individuals throughout the course of highly stressful circumstances.
  • Knowledge of FERPA, the Clery Act, and Title IX as they relate to students’ rights to privacy and student conduct code disciplinary proceedings.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and assessing residential education and living learning programs and initiatives.
Additional Information

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
