Summary of Job Duties:Tenured Associate/Full Professor, Departments of Food Science and Poultry Science with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR.

Description: The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas invite applications for a 12-month, tenured endowed chair position (80% Research; 20% Teaching) in the area of food safety at Associate/Full Professor level. This will have a joint appointment in Food Science (60% Research; 20% Teaching) and Poultry Science (20% Research). We seek an energetic individual to fill the Donald “Buddy” Wray Endowed Chair in food safety, who will provide exemplary leadership in areas key to Arkansas’ economy including meat processing and safety. This $3M endowment was funded by Tyson Foods and Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation.

Responsibilities: Develop a nationally competitive and collaborative research program in food safety that meets the critical needs of the state. Focus areas may include microbial safety of meat, poultry, and/or alternate proteins, advanced food processing, food safety intervention technologies, risk assessment of foodborne pathogens, toxins, and/or other contaminants, molecular methods in food safety microbiology, or leveraging artificial intelligence technology and other tools to create a safer and more digital, traceable food system. The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of the food industry, established professional networks, and demonstrated leadership. In this prestigious role, the candidate will provide leadership in developing multidisciplinary teams to secure extramural funding for conducting collaborative research in food safety. The candidate will serve as the Director of the Center for Food Safety (https://foodsafety.uada.edu/), which includes faculty from various departments in the Division of Agriculture. High stakeholder engagement is expected. Extension appointment may be offered if desired by the candidate.

The University of Arkansas is currently establishing an Institute for Integrative and Innovative Research (I3R) using $194.7M grant from Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation (https://www.uark.edu/research/i3r/). Two of five signature areas are food technology and data science. The candidate is expected to collaborate with I3R faculty. The successful candidate will contribute effectively to departmental teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, as appropriate. The candidate will be expected to engage in supporting online masters in food safety programs, recruit and advise graduate students, supervise undergraduate research, and secure extramural funding from various sources including Federal, State, commodity, private, and industry sources. This position can have an appointment in the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science at the University of Arkansas.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Food Science or a closely related field and have a significant level of teaching, research and scholarship accomplishments commensurate with the rank of associate/full professor with tenure. Candidates should possess excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with other researchers and clientele groups.

Desired Qualifications: Experience in research center administration, leading collaborative teams in securing large grants, development of distance learning materials, and working with the regulatory/governmental agencies are highly desirable.
