We aim to provide leadership, nationally and internationally, in all three fields. We assert and celebrate the value of the arts to the mission of the University of Michigan. SMTD is strongly committed to access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppression as a means of enacting justice and achieving and sustaining excellence.

Duties: Conduct University Choir (large choir comprised primarily of undergraduate vocal performance and choral music education majors) and conduct Men’s Glee Club (large and renowned male chorus comprised primarily of non-music majors). Work alongside the director of choirs and the graduate choral conductors to continue their work in fostering a diverse and inclusive choral program in the areas of repertoire, curriculum, personnel and community engagement. Other areas of conducting and teaching may include undergraduate choral conducting, choral conducting for graduate non-conducting majors and advanced undergraduate students, graduate choral literature, graduate score study, and other duties consistent with the candidate’s interests and expertise. The appointee will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence; create an innovative curriculum for a broad range of students of varied identities and backgrounds who seek to explore a range of educational opportunities and career pathways; recruit and retain students of exceptional promise; and develop and maintain a visible national and international profile as a conductor and a pedagogue. The appointee will also be expected to participate in faculty governance, attend faculty meetings and serve on faculty and university committees as appropriate.

Qualifications

Doctorate in choral conducting required; established reputation as conductor and teacher; demonstrated ability to empower, advocate for, and value a broad range of students of diverse identities and experiences, as shown through pedagogy, mentoring, and related activities; experience with the programming of innovative repertoire including works by marginalized groups and living composers.
