Job Summary

Deliver individual and group academic advisement to current and prospective students new to UT Arlington. Assists with the planning and delivery of an academic advising initiative, conducts proactive outreach, provides interventions for students with academic early alerts, and lends additional support to students on academic warning/probation. Responsible for facilitating the exchange of academic and technical information. Provide professional advisement to enhance the academic experience, student retention and completion. Responsible for assisting with recruitment and admissions process for CAPPA . Advising current and prospective CAPPA students, primarily students in the Master of City & Regional Planning graduate program and the two CAPPA Doctoral programs with supplemental advising of the CAPPA undergraduate programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct academic advising for current and prospective students utilizing multiple modalities such as in-person, virtual, phone, and email.
  • Provide guidance on academic topics such as degree requirements, relevant course selection, and provide students with assistance in setting and achieving educational and career goals.
  • Help students make informed academic decisions teaching them how to track their own academic progress, locate and interpret appropriate policies, and to utilize the tools and resources available.
  • Monitor the academic progress of a student caseload.
  • This includes proactive outreach to provide students with just-in-time assistance.
  • Conduct verification of degree progress, removal of holds, and approval of various forms to ensure timely student progression, etc.
  • Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts, and placement results.
  • Enter advising notes into MyMav following best practices for documenting student appointments/contacts.
  • Assist with training new advisors and promoting support services to the faculty, staff, and students at UTA .
  • Assist CAPPA’s Director of Academic and Student Affairs in new and ongoing initiatives. Assist with the administration of the College Success Programs and Initiatives.
  • Administer Program Marketing and Outreach/Recruitment. Assist CAPPA with departmental public relations and participate in both campus and non-campus events and activities, such as visiting groups, school visitations, and special projects as assigned.
  • Complete and/or initiate outreach to prospective and applicant students via phone, email, and/or Teams.
  • Review and collect application material for admission processing with unit leaders, and upload material in Perceptive Content, Slate, SharePoint.
  • Maintain/update admission spreadsheet and data information for student applications.
  • Enter final admission decision in MyMav for unit leaders.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of all applicable federal, state, and University policies and procedures.
  • Keep abreast of relevant academic programs and support services such as counseling and tutoring within a College and University and provide appropriate referrals to students.
  • Participate in meetings, professional conferences, and individual professional development.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of workshops/seminars in areas related to collegiate skills and life skills, as well as topics related to personal, academic, and career development for college students.
  • Give presentations and facilitate instruction of the workshops.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other departments for referrals, consultation, and other activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and two (2) years of experience working with college students in an academic advising capacity or the equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree is strongly preferred. Two (2) years of experience as an academic advisor at a public R1 University.
  • Experience working with undergraduate and graduate college students in an academic advising and admissions capacity.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Federal, state, and local policies and procedures governing academic advising functions; and resources provided by academic advising associations such as NACADA and TEXAAN .
  • A working knowledge and ability to utilize the University Catalog is essential.
  • Student advocacy; written and verbal interpersonal communication; organizing information and projects; problem solving; adhering to deadlines; taking initiative; student recruitment and outreach; and navigating student information systems.
  • Work professionally, collaboratively, and independently; and proficiently use Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint.
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working collaboratively with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
