Job Description Summary / TWC Summary

JOB SUMMARY :
The Department of Physics and the Division of Research and Innovation at Texas Southern University ( TSU ) invites applicants for a 12-month tenure-track faculty position in the Assistant Professor level. The position is an external grant funded position and can potentially have a joint appointment with the Physics Department at Brookhaven National Lab ( BNL ), which is focused on high-energy physics and nuclear physics. The joint position between TSU and BNL will begin Fall 2024 and leverage the MOU between the two institutions.

Application review will begin soon and continue until the position is filled. Outstanding candidates from all areas of Physics will be considered. We especially encourage applications from candidates working in the areas of Astrophysics, Atmospheric Physics, Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Biophysics, Computational Physics, Nuclear Physics, High Energy Physics, Health Physics, or closely related fields. The new faculty member will be expected to carry out a vigorous, externally funded research program including research projects for undergraduate and graduate students, advise students, and participate fully in the teaching program of the department.

In addition to ensure the faculty member has ample time to conduct scholarly activities, the teaching load will be reduced by 50% for the first three years of the appointment. At the end of the grant funding, the successful candidate’s 9-month salary will be supported by the institution. It is expected that faculty will seek and receive extramural research funding for summer salary.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :
Successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in scholarly research and teaching. Responsibilities will include conducting rigorous academic research and contribute to a dynamic faculty team in the development of a new doctoral Physics program at TSU . The work distribution will be approximately 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service for the first three years of the appointment.
