Business Intelligence Trainer and Data Governance Analyst



As a member of the Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence (EDBI) group, Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence is a unit of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE). The team is responsible for developing and maintaining Rice’s data warehouse and supporting data management and business intelligence (BI) infrastructure environments. The group supports the institutional reporting infrastructure from all enterprise and most business function-specific systems.

The Business Intelligence Trainer and Data Governance Analyst at our university plays a critical role in both enhancing data product adoption and ensuring data integrity and security. This dual-role position involves designing, developing, and delivering comprehensive training programs on business intelligence tools, data visualization, and business rules tailored to departmental needs. Responsibilities include creating training materials, conducting workshops, providing one-on-one and refresher training sessions, and evaluating the effectiveness of these programs. The goal is to empower stakeholders to make data-informed decisions, thereby improving operational efficiency and academic outcomes.

Additionally, the role encompasses establishing and maintaining a robust data governance framework. This involves developing data management policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting best practices in data stewardship. The Analyst will work closely with IT, legal, and academic departments to address data governance needs, implement quality standards, and monitor compliance. The ideal candidate will be proficient in business intelligence tools like Tableau and Power BI, possess strong communication and instructional design skills, and have a solid background in data management and relevant regulations. This position is essential for fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement in data utilization while ensuring the university’s data assets are effectively governed, secure, and leveraged for strategic decision-making.

We are seeking a dynamic and skilled professional to join the Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence (EDBI) group within the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) as a Business Intelligence Trainer and Data Governance Analyst. This critical dual-role involves designing, developing, and delivering comprehensive training programs on business intelligence tools like Tableau and Power BI, tailored to departmental needs to enhance data product adoption and empower stakeholders to make data-informed decisions. Additionally, the role encompasses establishing and maintaining a robust data governance framework, developing data management policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting best practices in data stewardship. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication and instructional design skills, a solid background in data management and relevant regulations, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. This position is essential for fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement in data utilization while ensuring the university’s data assets are effectively governed, secure, and leveraged for strategic decision-making.

Workplace Requirements:

This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangement may be subject to change.

Hiring Range:

Expected minimum salary of $80,000, dependent on experience and qualifications.

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • 3 or more years of related experience
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Preferences:
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Over five years of experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in a higher education environment.
  • Proven track record of successfully implementing data governance frameworks in complex organizations.
  • Advanced proficiency in multiple business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik).
  • Extensive experience in developing e-learning content and using learning management systems (LMS).
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex data sets and provide actionable insights.
Essential Functions:

Design and Deliver Training Programs:
  • Develop and conduct comprehensive training sessions on business intelligence tools, data visualization techniques, and business rules.
  • Create and update training materials, including manuals, presentations, and online resources.
  • Provide one-on-one and group training sessions tailored to the needs of various departments.
Collaborate with Stakeholders:
  • Work closely with academic, administrative, and IT departments to identify specific data needs and customize training programs accordingly.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among departments to enhance data literacy and utilization.
Develop and Implement Data Governance Framework:
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for data management, ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with IT, legal, and academic departments to address data governance needs and implement data quality standards.
Monitor and Assess Training Effectiveness:
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs through feedback, assessments, and performance metrics.
  • Continuously update and improve training content based on the latest trends and advancements in data analytics and business intelligence.
Ensure Regulatory Compliance:
  • Stay informed about relevant data protection laws and regulations (e.g., GDPR, FERPA, HIPAA) and ensure university practices comply with these requirements.
  • Promote best practices in data stewardship and governance across the university.
Support Data Utilization and Troubleshooting:
  • Serve as a resource for troubleshooting data-related issues and provide solutions to enhance data quality and usability.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement in data utilization among university stakeholders.
