Position Overview:

Creates design research and fully designed costumes for up to 3 productions, and coordinates costumes for 2 dance concerts per fiscal year. Assists with costume construction as time allows. Productions may include theatrical plays, musicals, dance concerts and operas. Works closely with Costume Shop Manager to ensure that designed costumes are completed on time and within budget.

Mon-Fri 8-5 will require some evenings and weekends. This is a Summers Off position, 40 weeks on during the school year and 12 weeks off during the Summer.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

Develop design research for productions leading to finalized costume design renderings or storyboards in collaboration with the Director. Purchase, pull, or rent costumes or other wardrobe necessities for productions. Patternmaking, cutting and stitching as needed. Work with Costume Shop Manager in fittings to ensure the vision for the design is carried out. Work with Costume Shop Manager to develop a schedule which will ensure timely completion of costumes. Stay within established budget and maintain accurate record of expenses according to university policies. Attend all design and production meetings, costume fittings, dress rehearsals, and other rehearsals as needed. Check the appearance of costumes on stage or under lights to determine whether desired effects are being achieved. Work closely with undergraduate students in hands-on production learning environment. Help student workers to ensure they are using proper costume procedures and techniques. Establish and maintain a safe educational working environment. Responsible for Hair and Makeup Design for assigned productions. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience Required:

General education and 3+ years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Proficiency in research and creating detailed renderings. Strong communication skills for working with the production team and costume shop staff. Expertise in pattern making, cutting, and stitching. Ability to pull and shop for costumes efficiently. Skilled in managing costume
fittings and performing alterations. Experience in supervising costume crews. Must be self-motivated and capable of working independently and collaboratively.
