Position Overview
Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, seeding, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls. Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges. Take care of athletic fields, turf grass and artificial turf. Gather and remove litter. Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures. Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders. Monitor irrigation system and assist with scheduling, repairs, and maintenance of irrigation system. Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, curb lines or other grounds year-round. Perform utility locates as requested through 811 Okie Locate on campus and update through 811 Okie portal. Perform snow removal and other duties as assigned.
Department Specific Essential Job Functions
Work with manager to design and build new flowerbeds around campus. Mow, edge, weed eat turf on campus from time to time. Offers leadership and direction to Landscaping Maintenance I, II for daily duties, events, and tasks. Works with committees, contractors, and in house staff in the designing, scheduling, installation, and maintenance of new trees, shrubs, and flowers. Participates in daily trash removal on campus, sweeps and cleans around trash dumpsters and containers, and collects rubbish left on campus when needed. Maintenance of existing and installation of new fence and signs on campus. Provides guidance and helps in training employees on equipment, routine daily tasks and events. Monitors campus irrigation system and interacts with Smartrain irrigation software. Provides maintenance and repair along with Irrigation Tech for campus irrigation and provides input for updating and expanding existing systems. This candidate should have knowledge of a complete irrigation system, and the ability to communicate what may need repaired after running individual irrigation zones. Perform utility locates as requested through 811 Okie Locate on campus and update through 811 Okie portal. Perform snow removal and other duties as assigned. Help with the maintenance of the campus athletic fields, including artificial turf and dragging infields and setting bases in position. Maintains and oversees campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, and edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, and using weed control methods. Prepares flower beds for growing annuals and bulbs and other areas for seed and sod. Maintains campus trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding and cleaning shrub plantings. Moves equipment and other inventory for departments on campus. Operates water tanker with pumps and sprayers for watering and fertilizing; rototillers, lawn sweepers, sprayers, aerators, tractors for lawn care; and blade trucks, tractors, and spreaders for snow and ice removal. Observes, communicates, and complies with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, curb lines, assist with parking lot repairs using hot and cold patches. Snow removal to include sanding and applying de-icing chemicals from sidewalks and entries.
This position is deemed mission essential. In case of inclement weather or other emergency situations, the incumbent is expected to report to work as directed, provided the process of getting to work location does not put the incumbent into a dangerous situation. Available to help with a facilities emergency. This may necessitate the use of personal cell phones for after-hours call backs. Further, a pre-arranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather. Performs duties and complies with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed. Performs other related duties as necessary to support the UCO mission.
Qualifications/Experience Required
3+ years of relevant experience in chosen field or equivalent combination of education or vocational training and experience. Responsible for obtaining and maintaining licenses required by Ok Dept of Agriculture as applicator for lawn treatments within six months. Requires general education and performs administrative or manual tasks. Responsible for obtaining and maintaining all licenses required for UCO code compliance and special tools operations.
Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and be able to operate a typical motor vehicle.
Qualifications/Experience Preferred
3+ years of relevant experience in chosen field or equivalent combination of education or vocational training and experience as well as 3+ years experience in a leadership position in landscaping maintenance. Familiarity with the chemicals common to the trade. Current licenses required by Ok Dept of Agriculture as applicator for lawn treatments. Experience and knowledge associated with the management of a commercial smart irrigation system. Responsible for obtaining and maintaining all licenses required for UCO code compliance and special tools operations.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to work for long periods carrying a string trimmer, stick edger or walk with a backpack blower. Ability to operate a zero-turn mower for long periods of time. Ability to operate mowing equipment in a safe manner, always keeping safety the main priority.

- Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and 75 lbs. occasionally.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry 200 feet.

- Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across the campus.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Ability to use and reach with hands and arms regularly.
- Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
- Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
- Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision.
- Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
