Job Details
Chief Objective of Position
The Associate Director serves as a member of the Residence Life and Housing Administration central office team and is the staff member responsible for oversight, planning, and management of Housing Administration. This position is responsible for recommending and developing effective strategies targeted at maximizing housing occupancy and enhancing the satisfaction of residential students. The Associate Director will build partnerships with facilities and housekeeping staff to ensure residential facilities are safe, well-maintained, and meet Christopher Newport University’s standard of excellence. The Associate Director may assume the responsibilities of the Director of Residence Life and Housing Administration when absent by providing support and direction to faculty, staff, and students.
This position is a full-time, 12-month position with on-call requirements that include nights, weekends, breaks, and holidays. The position is live-off, therefore, requires staff to live within a reasonable response time from campus with reliable transportation.
Work Tasks
- Responsible for the occupancy management of residential facilities, including traditional-style Main Campus halls with 9-month contracts, apartment-style East Campus and Rappahannock halls for 10- and 12-month contracts, and Greek Village.
- Responsible for providing leadership to day-to-day housing administration, including room selection, room assignments, room changes, occupancy reporting, optimization of space, follow-up on open work orders, communication with students and families, break housing and late stay requests, summer housing, and damage billing.
- Serves as the contract administrator for the Housing Management System (StarRez) , and coordinates training to others in use of various functions within the StarRez system, as applicable.
- Prepares, reviews, and analyzes reports pertaining to the financial and operating performance of Residence Life and Housing administration and operations, including but not limited to, housing assignments, housing vacancies, revenues, expenses, and pending accounts receivable.
- Works to ensure accuracy of all charges to student accounts and record keeping within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Serves as a member of the housing exemption request committee.
- Directly supervise the Senior Manager of University Housing Administration Support and the University Housing Administrative Coordinator. Indirectly supervise the University Housing Analyst and student workers.
- Serves as a point of contact for students, employees, and families regarding housing concerns and use appropriate personnel and resources toward a resolution.
- Supports the Director in the general management and administration of the Office of Residence Life and Housing. Shares in the department’s overall direction by assuming responsibility in the absence of the Director. In consultation with the Director, provides budget management.
- Serves on Division of Student Affairs committees as determined by the Director.
- Collaborates with administrative units in Student Affairs, Student Services, Auxiliary Services, and Facilities Management, to foster an environment of overall student success.
- Participates in university events and assigned duties that support the academic mission of the University, the mission of the Student Affairs division, the goals of Residence Life and Housing Administration, including but not limited to Orientation, Commencement, Move-In, Move-Out, RF/RA/FDA training, and Admission Events. This may include participation at night and on weekends.

Required Education
Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with experience that equates to an advanced degree.
