Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The NC Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) is a business advisory resource for growing and developing businesses. The SBTDC’s highly skilled professionals provide services statewide from offices hosted by campuses of The University of North Carolina System. The SBTDC operates in formal partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration, making it a unique and valued asset in the economic development infrastructure of North Carolina. The SBTDC’s mission is to positively impact North Carolina’s economy by helping to grow small and mid-sized businesses and launch promising start-ups.

The Business Counselor is responsible for providing administrative services to the center and co-counseling to clients.
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

  • The case management specialist will collaborate with the Center Director and staff to provide support for client intake assessments and introductory counseling. This includes pre-screening to identify the needs of the particular client and then collaboratively making decisions on appropriate information dissemination and/or referrals to an SBTDC counselor or other small business assistance resources.
  • For pre-venture and start-up clients, specifically, the BC will engage in collaborative efforts to support their needs and often be the primary point of contact. When appropriate the BC will work directly with SBTDC clients to gather and input the information needed to produce business financial statements (income statements, balance sheets and cash flows). They will also perform financial ratio analysis, note areas of interest or concern.
  • The SBTDC counselor’s job is to make sure the client understands the statements and their implications. The counselor will then work with the client to incorporate the financials into a business plan or loan package, then help the client determine the appropriate next steps (possible examples: identify potential funding sources, rehearse banker presentation, develop benchmarks and tracking mechanisms, how to implement plan).
  • The BC will provide counsel on strategic planning, marketing and sales, human resources, organizational development, and other general business topics.
  • In addition to counseling small business clients, the Business Counselor will work alongside the regional center director to support the regional service center with departmental reporting, reconciliations and approvals, purchasing, asset management, data management, and budgeting.

Work Schedule/Hours:All professional level positions are expected to work a 40-hour work week, year-round. Normal hours of work are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required to meet client needs.
