The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Journalism, beginning Fall 2025.

The Department of Emerging Media prepares students to respond to a rapidly changing media environment. The department places an emphasis on good writing and storytelling, while recognizing that technology continuously impacts how we interact in the workplace and in our daily lives.

We are looking for a new hire who is actively engaged with emerging topics in the field, including but not limited to digital technology in journalism (e.g., AI, data journalism), global media systems and journalistic practices, new issues in the sociology of journalism and media economics. We are looking for candidates who can draw on professional journalism experience for teaching courses and advising student media. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to detail-oriented writing and an understanding of visual storytelling.



This position involves teaching two or more of the following undergraduate courses: introduction to mass media, principles of newswriting, multimedia reporting, media literacy, or other courses in the candidate's area(s) of interest. The typical teaching load is six courses (or equivalent with student media advising) per school year. The candidate will maintain an active research agenda in their area(s) of expertise and provide service to the Department, College, and University. As part of their service to the department, the candidate is expected to support the ThreeSixty Journalism program that is based in the department.

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a Ph.D. (U.S. or foreign equivalent degree) in journalism or a closely related field. Alternatively, ABD candidates nearing completion of their Ph.D. will be considered.
  • Must have 1 year of professional experience in journalism, or alternatively, 20 pieces of published journalistic work for any of the following:
  • Newspaper
  • Website
  • TV/Radio Station
  • Magazine
  • Other journalistic platforms
  • Must demonstrate teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level

  5. A teaching statement that includes evidence of teaching effectiveness and a syllabus of a class taught as an instructor attached.

  7. A reflection on diversity, equity and inclusion that describes your approach to integrate these values in your teaching, research, and/or service. This can include past, present, and future (planned) efforts.
  8. One academic writing sample.
  9. One published/posted/broadcast journalistic sample.
