Job Summary

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Assistant Director, Exploratory Student Success Center assists in the oversight of day-to-day operations and activities of the Student Success Center (SSC), in addition to serving in the role as an advisor. Working independently, under limited supervision, the Assistant Director assists the Managing Director in leading, developing, coordinating, implementing, and assessing unit activities, advising services, and programs in accordance with California State University (CSU) and San José State University (SJSU) policies to ensure academic success for all students in the SSC.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides general oversight of the day-to-day operations of the SSC to ensure excellent customer service that supports student success at all levels. Implements business processes for the academic year, and relays appropriate feedback to meet demands and specified timelines.
  • With direction from the SSC Managing Director, organize and coordinate hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student assistants.
  • Collaborate with SSC Managing Director to develop and implement center specific data collection and tracking strategies to evaluate effectiveness and quality of programs.
  • Advise a caseload of College of Information, Data, & Society Students
  • With direction from the SSC Managing Director, provide coordination, implementation, and advising for Early Support Program
  • With direction from the Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Advising and Success, the AD will be the project director for the California Promise program
  • Collaborate with the SSC Managing Director, to provide coordination, implementation, and advising to special programs, including orientation, Early Support, Academic Probation, and other UAS initiatives
  • Resolves student issues or recommends appropriate courses of action related to difficult academic situations
  • Maintain knowledge of high-impact practices and research in academic advising
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format various types of correspondence, reports and communications
  • Ability to create materials and presentations
  • Working knowledge of software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and the internet. Ability to use PeopleSoft and working knowledge of student success related applications such as EAB, MyGPS, and others
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters
  • Ability to interface with a variety of campus offices through the establishment of liaison connections to maximize student success
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • General knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, techniques used in advising, and college student development theory, and provide holistic advising support to students in-person and virtually
  • Ability to determine proper techniques and actions to utilize while engaged with individuals, including de-escalation
  • General knowledge of research-based and data-informed practices
Required Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s in Higher education administration, education, Educational Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or directly related discipline
  • Minimum of five years of experience working directly in higher education
  • Demonstrated advising experience
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of academic/general education requirements, admissions and registration processes, and resources available to students
  • Experience supervising students
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment


Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional IV
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,000/month - $7,099/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,019/month - $8,585/month

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. SJSU will issue a contingent offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was offered the position on a contingent basis.

The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required. All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate Background. Some positions may also require fingerprinting. SJSU will pay all costs associated with this procedure. Evidence of required degree(s) or certification(s) will be required at time of hire.
