Job Summary
The certified public safety and security officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors by patrolling the campus, reporting crime and enforcing policies of the university.
Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators
The intent of this job description is to provide a representation of the types of duties and level of responsibility that will be required of positions given this title. Job Responsibilities and Execution
- Secures premises by patrolling property, monitoring surveillance equipment and inspecting buildings, equipment and access points
- Upholds the university’s standards and reputation by complying with legal requirements of the Clery Act
- Provides public assistance, including lockout services, first aid, vehicle jump‐starts and traffic direction
- Prevents loss and damage by reporting irregularities and informing violators of policy and procedures
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the university’s Emergency Action Plan
- Enforces campus parking regulations
- Completes incident/accident reports for missing or stolen property and criminal activity; assures accurate reports, including detailed, complete observations and information
- Enforces and upholds university policies
- Accompanies visitors, students and employees upon request
- Supports the mission of the University and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
- Models, supports, and holds others accountable to the University’s values
- Completes reports by recording observations, information, occurrences and surveillance activities
- Educates violators on proper policies and procedures
- Interviews witnesses and obtains signatures
Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.
- Associate degree or equivalent experience
- Valid driver’s license
- Acceptable background check (must be completed within 30 days of hire)
- Law enforcement or prior military experience
- Firearm proficiency as well as ability to meet St. Charles County licensing qualifications to carry a department issued firearm while on-duty
- Must obtain CPR and First Aid certifications
- Must complete a psychological evaluation and drug screen upon a conditional offer of employment
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
- Ability to use good judgment, think critically and solve problems
- Ability to respond to hostile situations, intervene in physical altercations and act as mediator
- Ability to work with large groups of students, including students with special needs
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to remain calm while responding during emergencies
- Strong personal integrity
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- General office setting
- Outdoor weather conditions
- Varied shifts, including days, afternoons or midnights
- Some exposure to hazards and physical risks, which requires basic safety precautions
- Essential worker designation

- Ability to work effectively at a computer for up to eight hours daily
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions
- Ability to use a two-way radio

- Ability to handle and lift 25 pounds
- Ability to report to work during emergencies, unless otherwise notified
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
