Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Affairs
A diverse community of scholars, scientists, educators, and clinicians, Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) is educating the next generation of transformational leaders in nursing. The school advances nursing science and education around the globe and fosters the scholarly practice of nursing across the U.S. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the DUSON's Master's program third in the nation for its 2024 "Best Nursing Schools" rankings. The Doctor of Nursing Practice program ranked #3 (tie), while all participating specialty programs continued the trend of leading the country among graduate nursing program rankings at #1. Undergoing a current dean transition with a compelling and charismatic interim dean in place for the long term, DUSON is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and ambitious advancement leader to chart a new fundraising and alumni relations course for the School.
The Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Affairs (AD) serves as a member of the Dean's senior leadership group and coordinates closely with leaders from Duke Health and Duke University development and alumni affairs teams. The AD is responsible for planning, developing, and directing a new comprehensive fundraising and alumni relations program for DUSON. The next AD will have the opportunity to create and implement a comprehensive strategic advancement plan that includes benchmark outcomes and a clear plan for achieving them. In addition, the AD will be expected to manage a portfolio of DUSON's top prospects and donors (including those exclusive to the dean), provide oversight of the school's two volunteer boards, engage faculty meaningfully in the overall advancement effort, and provide day-to-day management and leadership of the development team, a number of whom are new to DUSON. Duke University is currently in the quiet phase of a multi-billion dollar campaign, and DUSON has undertaken its goal with a deep commitment and strong results to date.
In the next AD, DUSON is seeking an experienced advancement leader who can guide and inspire their team while also developing strong donor relationships. The ideal candidate will have experience managing through innovation and change and building on past accomplishments to create a more robust advancement effort for their organization. Successful candidates will have a strong individual commitment to the School of Nursing's mission of health equity and social justice. Exposure to all facets of fundraising, including annual giving, principal giving, major giving, alumni relations, and relationship-building with key constituencies both internal and external is crucial for this role. Experience managing, motivating, and retaining a staff with multiple priorities and within the context of a complex university and medical center development system.
A minimum of 10 years of progressive fundraising experience and success leading a team of development professionals is required. Significant and successful experience developing and leading fundraising strategy implementation in an academic health center or for a complex healthcare organization highly preferred. In addition, a bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
All applications, nominations, and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile available at wittkieffer.com.
