Moores Cancer Center, Deputy Director
The Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences is committed to academic excellence, and to enhancing access, inclusion, and success of our diverse faculty, staff, and students. The UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is embarking on a new trajectory to leverage its significant research and clinical strength which is embedded in an environment that values innovation and collaboration. We intend to re-envision how we prevent, detect, and treat cancer to improve the lives of cancer patients and the communities we serve. With a robust commitment from UCSD executive leadership, attractive resources across the MCC/UCSD, an exciting San Diego biotech environment, and a new Cancer Center Director leading a dynamic new senior leadership team, we seek a Deputy Director to fill a key leadership role as we launch the next era of impact by the Moores Cancer Center.
As the region's only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moores Cancer Center has been on the leading edge of research and transforming cancer care since 1978. With a new structure built on the UC San Diego Health La Jolla campus in 2005, the Cancer Center operates a three-story facility with an adjoining five-story research tower at the La Jolla campus, and will soon be opening a new state-of-the art cancer center at the Hillcrest campus. Moores Cancer Center is home to over 400 members, which includes 16 members of the National Academy of Sciences and Medicine and a multitude of innovation and breakthroughs. These leaders have contributed discoveries that have elevated our understanding of cancer biology, treatment and prevention. UC San Diego Health is regarded as a leader among the five academic medical centers within the 10-campus University of California system. Collectively known as UC Health, these medical centers comprise the fourth largest health care delivery system in California and train nearly 50 percent of the state's medical students and residents.
The successful candidate will bring excellent academic, research, and collaborative skills to this position. The UCSD Moores Cancer Center seeks a dynamic, collaborative faculty leader to coordinate and expand the national prominence of our clinical-research portfolio across the MCC Consortium (including San Diego State University, a Hispanic-serving university, and the La Jolla Institute of Immunology, a powerhouse of basic immunology research).
The Deputy Director will foster and expand clinical research studies and trials and conversely, bring clinical study results and clinical care observations to population and laboratory scientists for further exploration.
The Deputy Director will be responsible to play a leading role, along with the MCC Director, in the recruitment of promising and established faculty members (both clinician scientists and researchers) to achieve the MCC's goals, in alignment with its strategic plan. It is anticipated that the Deputy Director will focus on strategic hires in the areas of (but not limited to) immunology, novel therapeutics, precision oncology, and other areas of oncology research and patient care.
