The Johns Hopkins University Neuroscience Department is seeking aResearch Technologistwho will work with a team that includes other technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Will work under the general supervision of a faculty investigator and other laboratory members, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing experiments and analysis.




Work requires the basic use of scientific methods and procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The position requires a basic understanding of the theory behind experiments and the application of analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. The successful applicant is one who has the ability to work well with a team of lab scientists as well as independently.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in research to elucidate the molecular stratification of different classes of neurons in the CNS.
  • Perform in vivo two photon imaging of oligodendrocytes in mice.
  • Determine the density of oligodendrocytes in longitudinal imaging datasets.
  • Reconstruct the morphology of individual oligodendrocytes and their myelin sheaths.
  • Quantify changes in the density and morphology of oligodendrocytes in vivo in response to exposure to remyelination agents.
  • Also perform routine lab tasks and lab management activities to support experimental efforts in the lab and will work with trainees and the investigator to implement new techniques.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry and inventorying.
  • Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, incubator, spectrophotometer, electrophoresis equipment, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
  • The research technologist will work with a team that includes other technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
  • The successful candidate will have an opportunity to run an independent research project as well as be involved in other projects by assisting with experiments.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
  • Experience with rodent surgery experiments, such as virus injection or fiber optic implantation.
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic lab methods, such as making chemical solutions, histological techniques and molecular techniques.
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy.
  • Data analysis software such as MATLAB and Python.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
