The HCI Institute at Carnegie Mellon is searching for technical HCI teaching track faculty with experience exploring new technologies within real-world industry settings and applying them throughout the human-centered design process. The qualified candidate is a user experience engineer (UXE), creative technologist, design technologist, software developer with user interface implementation experience, or other hybrid role with a proven track record of continuously exploring and learning new technologies in order to innovate, make new user experiences tangible and create new value by embracing the ever increasing pace of technology change. HCII teaching faculty typically carry a load of 8 classes annually that may be offset with service on committees and other HCII initiatives.

The HCI Institute produces exceptional undergraduate and master students who improve the state of the world through a systematic, disciplined and principled approach to using technology to innovate and improve the human condition. We teach students preparing to become UX designers, service designers, UX researchers, HCI practitioners, frontend developers, learning science innovators, human-centered data scientists, product managers, and other technology leadership positions.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with industry experience as a user experience engineer (UXE), creative technologist, design technologist, UI developer, or other roles in which making functionally robust prototypes or systems is essential to experimentation, feasibility testing and concept validation. The qualified candidate will have many projects that demonstrate the ability to rapidly learn new technologies and tools. Candidates with academic teaching experience and/or industry mentoring responsibilities will be preferred. We are particularly interested in people who build and test as a primary method to design human-centered products and services. The ideal candidate will have strengths in technical prototyping, front-end/UI development, cross-platform app frameworks, user research methods, product/service assessment, and data-driven innovation. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to continuously learn emerging technologies such as those involving conversation, game engines, gesture recognition, analytics, automation and Internet of Things (IoT), as well as new user research and assessment methods tailored to these technologies. Candidates may also teach additional HCI project, methods, and seminar courses.

An undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software development, design, theater arts or related field is required for this position. We especially encourage applications from candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to working with and/or mentoring under-represented students such as women, minorities, students with disabilities, and students from lower SES. We will consider candidates at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching Professor levels.
