Position Description
The Professional Writing Assistant, reporting to the Writing Center Coordinator, provides online assistance to graduate and non-traditional undergraduate students regarding writing of papers assigned to their courses. The position interacts with adult students and provides resources for them to improve their overall writing skills. This position is part-time, 15 hours/week, 12 months.
Position Responsibilities
- Using an asynchronous online format, reviews papers of students for grammar, typographical errors, content, structure, and compliance with writing guidelines (e.g., American Psychological Association).
- Assesses students’ writing abilities and determines opportunities for improvement in writing skills.
- Provides in-text feedback to students utilizing the “track changes” feature of Microsoft Word, Brightspace Feedback Studio, Google Suite, or other program agreed upon with the Writing Center Coordinator.
- Maintains standards for feedback agreed upon with the Writing Center Coordinator.
- Maintains Brightspace writing site regarding form and paper submissions by students.
- Identifies potential plagiaristic opportunities by students, communicating with students and/or faculty when appropriate.
- As requested, provides general writing resources to graduate and non-traditional undergraduate students in order to improve overall writing effectiveness (e.g., structure, paragraph transitions, writing guideline adherence, etc.).
- As requested, provides online workshops for graduate and non-traditional undergraduate students on topics related to writing using Zoom or other online conferencing platforms.
- Maintains competencies with web-based training and attendance at seminars.
- Other duties as assigned by the Writing Center Coordinator.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, excellent written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated student service orientation, and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite are required. One-two years of experience with Brightspace preferred. Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines and ability to work independently in a cross-functional team fostering trust with all levels of faculty, staff, and leadership are essential. Experience in, or positive attitude towards, business and adult education are essential.
