Job Summary

This position is responsible for the coordination of administrative, educational and visitor services and programs for the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden. The incumbent works independently to meet the programmatic, supervisory, and administrative goals to advance the Garden's mission. These operations include regular administrative duties, as well as on-site Garden oversight tasks and supervision of student workers and volunteers involved in activities, such as gardening, educational programs, and setting up exhibitions and activities for visitors.

This position will lead in cultivating an informative, efficient, and welcoming experience for visitors to the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden. This position will oversee a team of student assistants and volunteers in facilitating memorable experiences for all Garden visitors. This position develops and implements a variety of administrative tasks, educational programs, exhibitions, and activities designed to engage visitors and increase their understanding of Japanese culture. Responsibilities also include, enforcing Garden rules, tracking visitor attendance and feedback, and acting as first point of contact for customer service issues. The position requires a depth of knowledge about Japanese culture and the ability to interact with people of all ages, ethnicities, and social positions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Support of Visitor and Member Services - Oversees docent program and tour reservation system. Supports the Center Director by ensuring a high level of visitor satisfaction and safety.
  • Oversees Volunteers and Student Assistants - Trains and oversees student assistants and volunteers to ensure they are knowledgeable and well-informed. Ensures student assistants and volunteers can provide high-level customer service and support to Garden visitors.
  • General Administrative Tasks - Coordinates with other Garden staff to implement Garden projects, procedures, and policies. Tracks and submits daily attendance logs. Interacts with university and community entities.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Experience working with the public as a docent or tour guide, giving and/or creating in-person or virtual tours. Knowledge of Asian/Japanese culture, history and/or art.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to four years of administrative support experience required.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline or equivalent experience preferred.

    Experience in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Asian Art, Asian Culture, Landscape Architecture or related field or commensurate work experience is preferred.

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

    Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $3,680 - $4,732 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,680 - $5,783 per month.
