Western Michigan University (WMU) is seeking applications for the position of Senior Director of International Student and Scholar Services (I3S) within its renowned international office, the Haenicke Institute for Global Education (HIGE).

The Senior Director of I3S will play a pivotal role in overseeing international student recruitment and admissions, admissions operations, and immigration services for international students, staff, and scholars. Reporting to the Associate Provost for Global Education, the Senior Director will provide comprehensive leadership, management, and supervision to the I3S unit. They will devise proactive strategies to adapt to evolving recruitment and admissions trends while ensuring exceptional service delivery to the international student and scholar community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Directing and supervising daily operations and programs for international students, scholars, and dependents, guiding the staff of I3S with strategic vision.
  • Serving as the chief compliance officer for all non-immigrant regulations and policies across all WMU campuses, ensuring adherence to F-1, J-1, H-1B, and other visa categories.
  • Developing and implementing policy guidelines, advising university departments on non-immigrant visa issues, and ensuring ongoing compliance.
  • Spearheading the development and integration of technology solutions to enhance administrative efficiency and federal reporting functions.
  • Managing the department's annual operating and recharge budget to support its strategic mission and financial sustainability.
  • Collaborating with HIGE’s leadership team in strategic planning and budget implementation, including fiscal resource allocation.
  • Acting as a liaison with various government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State.

Minimum qualifications include a Masters degree from an accredited institution, along with at least 3 years of leadership experience in a similar international student and scholar unit or in an international enrollment management role. Candidates must also be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents to comply with U.S. Government requirements for issuing student immigration documents.

Desired competencies include demonstrated leadership abilities, comprehensive knowledge of relevant nonimmigrant regulations, proficiency in delivering sessions and workshops, strong customer relations, communication skills, adaptability to regulatory changes and student needs, and the ability to work collaboratively and independently.

The Haenicke Institute for Global Education (HIGE) fosters global engagement at WMU, boasting a dedicated team led by the Associate Provost, Dr. Paulo Zagalo-Melo. WMU has over 1,300 international students and an additional 1,000 students enrolled in full WMU degrees outside of the United States through strategic university partnerships. WMU has a significant number of dual degrees, transfer agreements, and other curricula articulations supporting a substantial part of its international enrollment.
