Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time faculty position in the department of biology at the anticipated rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The department offers BA and BS degrees in biology, biology education, and wildlife management. This person will be responsible for teaching courses and laboratories in genetics and microbiology, along with other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Other responsibilities include academic advising, participating on university committees and scholarly activity. Start date is dependent on applicant availability. Rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Biology faculty collaborate closely with other departments to provide support courses for students pursuing degrees in biochemistry, education, healthcare, and criminal justice as well as supporting the general education program. Opportunities are available for interested faculty to mentor undergraduate research with funding from the South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN).

The successful candidate will:

Hold an advanced degree in biology or a closely related field. A terminal degree is preferred, but master’s or near-completion ABDs will be considered. Have taught successfully, preferably at the college level. Be enthusiastic about approaching teaching and learning in innovative ways that generate interest in the discipline and strengthen student engagement. Be comfortable with, or willing to learn, the use of digital technologies to enhance student engagement and learning. Be firmly committed to high quality teaching and to active, applied learning in the classroom and laboratory setting.All candidates are encouraged to provide evidence of successful college-level teaching, including strong professor-student relationships, a commitment to student development, and to creative pedagogical practice.  All applications must include a letter of interest, a 1–2-page statement of teaching philosophy and research interest involving undergraduates, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information (including phone numbers and email addresses) of four professional references. The University is within an hour’s drive of Sioux Falls, one of the Upper Midwest’s largest statistical metropolitan areas. It is within a six-hour drive of several major metropolitan areas (Omaha, NE; Minneapolis, MN; Kansas City, MO).
