Job Details

The Department of Religious Studies at Bates College is seeking to hire a scholar of American Religions/Religion in America for a one-year position (with possibility of a one-year renewal) starting August 1, 2024. The position is open with regard to the area of specialization but we are especially interested in scholars who center issues of power, privilege, race, and colonialism in their work and will enhance the department’s curriculum and course offerings. Given the interdisciplinary nature of religious studies the successful candidate will have thought expansively about how to link their courses to Bates’ broader liberal arts curriculum and will have a good knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogies in their scholarship and classroom teaching. The successful candidate will teach “Religion and Film” and “American Religious History, 1840-Present” in the Fall semester. Other courses will be determined in consultation with other members of the department.

The teaching load for this position is five courses across the academic year, distributed over two semesters and a four-week short term in May. Our students represent a wide range of experiences and identities. We seek a colleague who is committed to sustaining a strong and inclusive community of learning. We encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds and identities, individuals who have followed nontraditional pathways to higher education, and individuals with a demonstrated interest in advancing the college’s continuing commitments to equity and inclusion. Candidates should identify their strengths and experiences in these areas.

Ph.D. is preferred, advanced ABD will be considered.

Application Instructions:
Review of applications begins May 24, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a cover letter (which should discuss your research and how you design your syllabi and engage in pedagogical practices that foster equity and inclusion), a curriculum vitae, and a list of at least three referees.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check
