Position Summary

The Term Reforestation Nursery Management Technician (Technician) position will serve an approximately 3-month term during the 2024 reforestation nursery growing season (approximately June – August, inclusive) based primarily at the Northern Arizona University ( NAU ) Research Greenhouse Facility in Flagstaff, AZ, with the potential for working and training visits to NMHU’s Las Vegas, NM campus and/or NMSU’s John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center in Mora, NM. This position is associated with the New Mexico Reforestation Center and is meant to provide opportunities for the Technician to develop nursery management and reforestation expertise through hands-on experience and training in nursery and field environments while working on New Mexico Highlands University research and operational projects. The Technician will work closely with the NAU Research Greenhouse Facility Manager on routine nursery operations, including irrigation and fertilization, mixing growing media, data collection, and assisting with ongoing research projects in nursery, laboratory, and field environments.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Assist the NAU Research Greenhouse Facility Manager with routine nursery management operations, with an emphasis on learning and applying the theory underlying those practices;
- Assist with nursery practices and events potentially including, but not limited to: seed handling and sowing, media preparation, container preparation, irrigation, fertilization, pest management, measurements and data collection/entry, packing and distribution of tree seedlings, planning and execution of nursery and reforestation operations, trainings, tours and public outreach;
- Assist with reforestation-related fieldwork, training, and/or outreach activities;
- Potentially assist with tree seed scouting, collection, and/or processing; and,
- Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

- B.S. in Forestry or a closely related discipline. Suitability of non-forestry degrees will be determined at the discretion of the Search Committee and/or Hiring Authority.
- Possession of a valid state-issued driver’s license.
- Ability and willingness to work in-person at the NAU Research Greenhouse Facility in Flagstaff, AZ for the duration of this term position.

Preferred Qualifications

- Master of Forestry (M.F.) or M.S. in a discipline closely related to forestry. Suitability of non-forestry degrees will be determined at the discretion of the Search Committee and/or Hiring Authority.

Special Conditions for Eligibility

- Ability and willingness to work in-person at the NAU Research Greenhouse Facility in Flagstaff, AZ for the duration of this term position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Knowledge of forestry and its subdisciplines, including silviculture and forest management.
- Basic knowledge of the reforestation pipeline and the role of nurseries and greenhouses for supporting reforestation operations.
- Ability to understand and follow both simple and complex instructions and/or protocols that may be provided in either verbal or written forms.
- Ability to apply the scientific method and critical thinking skills to learn and apply reforestation nursery cultural practices within a greenhouse nursery environment.
- Knowledge of basic applied chemistry and plant physiology as relevant for tree seedling production in a greenhouse nursery environment.
- Ability to learn and operate effectively through on-the-job training, with interest in potentially serving in future training, teaching, outreach, and/or mentor roles related to the activities undertaken during this term position.
- Ability and willingness to safely handle fertilizers, chemicals, and other potentially hazardous materials encountered during the course of routing nursery management.
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings and/or late nights, as required by greenhouse nursery operations and/or field work.

Physical Demands

- Ability to work for prolonged periods in hot and/or humid environments.
- Ability to work outside safely under all weather conditions.
- Ability to safely lift, move, and handle potentially heavy loads of 50 lbs. or more. (Accommodations may be possible for applicants unable to lift such loads but cannot be guaranteed.)

Working Environment

Work may occur in nursery, greenhouse, field, laboratory, and/or office environments.
