Overview of Associate Director of Housing and Residential Education

The Associate Director of Housing and Residential Education will supervise two full-time housing professionals, supporting them in their areas. The Associate Director will focus on the areas of occupancy management in coordination with assignments staff and the Director of Housing and Residential Education as well as support other areas such as conduct, assessment, programming and marketing.

Pay:
  • $60,000 - $64,000
Duties and Responsibilities of Associate Director of Housing and Residential Education
  • Directly supervise and train two full-time professional staff members. Indirectly supervises 20-30 RA’s and 24-hour service desk staff. Reviews and revises department processes/practices on a yearly basis.
  • Creates, revises, maintains, and updates department Training Manuals
  • Establishes performance evaluation model for all Housing and Residential Education (HRE) student employees. Revises and improves established procedures and practices for 24-hour Service Desk Operations.
  • Assists with move in/out processes.
  • In the absence of the Director of Housing and Residential Education, the Associate Director is responsible for the operation of the Department of Housing and Residential Education
  • Serve on a duty rotation to respond to high-level emergencies that can’t be handled by the frontline professional duty staff.
  • Working with the Assistant Director for Residential Education, addresses student behavioral concerns as well as serving as a hearing officer for high-level conduct violations. Conducts resident hearings for medium to high level cases and/or refer residents to other departments as needed.
  • Oversee theft management of vending areas.
  • With the Director of Housing, the Associate Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of Living and Learning Communities as well as theme housing.
  • Ensure the success of housing student organizations (University Village Council, National Residence Hall Honorary or Residence Hall Association) in coordination with the Assistant Director for Residential Education.
  • In conjunction with the organization advisor and the Office of Student Life, ensure proper training and leadership development opportunities to housing student organization members.
  • Track and assess programming initiatives such as the development of living and learning programs.

Education of Associate Director of Housing and Residential Education
  • Masters Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel or related field required
Experience of Associate Director of Housing and Residential Education
  • Five years of professional, experience working in a student housing environment
  • Must have at least five years years of progressively responsible experience in housing and residence life
  • At least four years of supervision experience within a student housing setting and served on a duty rotation
  • Incumbent is required to reside within 30 minutes of the Purdue Northwest Hammond Campus
  • Night and weekend work will be required on a rotating basis
Core Competencies of Associate Director of Housing and Residential Education
  • Knowledge of concepts, principles and practices of counseling, particularly as they apply to young adults
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws relating to the operation of or having an impact on the Residence Halls
  • Knowledge and ability to supervise, mentor, coach and discipline staff
  • Skilled in techniques and methodologies in administering student discipline and in handling crisis situations
  • Skill in communications, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with college officials, campus police officers, students and public
  • Skill in recognizing, analyzing, developing solutions to a variety of problem situations as they relate to residence hall students
  • Ability to interact with diverse population; ability to make rational decisions in an emergency situation and to remain calm in high stress / high pressure environment
  • As part of the job responsibilities associated with this position, knowledge of rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA should be maintained, reviewed and practiced to ensure compliance relative to those applicable duties
