The Opportunity:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Academic Coaching and Student Success will lead, guide and develop strategies related to academic advising, student success coaching, retention and graduation. As a leading liberal arts institution with an intentional focus of graduating our scholars in four years, this position works this unit from across campus to accomplish this goal, provides oversight regarding the quality of the student experience and success; including advising, academic coaching and tutoring services. These activities will be developed, implemented and assessed with the specific purpose of increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
The Position:
Provides leadership and direction, strategic planning and supervision for the following areas: Academic Coaching Center ( Student Success Coaches) and Tutoring.
- Leads the development and facilitation of training sessions for staff that involves comprehensive mastery of intrusive advising and coaching strategies, holistic student support and comprehensive programming and services to meet the needs of students with diverse needs and experiences.
- Works directly with the College Deans, Chairs and Faculty to promote best practices for advising and student success coaching.
- Directs and develops tracking and reporting systems for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating retention data and student success reports to college leadership and other state and federal agencies.
- Manages office operations, including other academic support services for the Tutoring Center.
- Creates, recommends, and implements policy, guidelines, and procedures.
- Recruits/interviews/hires/trains/supervises/coaches/evaluates and schedules assigned personnel.
- Collaborates with faculty to identify and select tutors.
- Develops and implements various forms and modes of educational technologies in support of tutorial services.
- Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, monitors, and evaluates all management personnel.
- Implements, monitors, and evaluates the progress of students.
- Compiles and writes University reports.
- Provides supervision to the Director of Student Success and Student Success Coaches.
- Serves as liaison between support services departments in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.
- Maintains regular communication with staff.
- Attends appropriate University committee and/or community meetings.
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with faculty and staff. Works closely with all units to ensure services align to improve retention rates annually.
- Establishes, maintains and monitors budget and resource management; writes proposals to enhance resources in all reporting units.
- Monitors purchases and resource allocation needs within all units.
- Collaborates with University and Community partners to identify and secure external resources and funding (local, state, regional and federal) to support student success and educational equity issues.
- In addition to the above, other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A master’s degree in higher education, student affairs or other associated academic discipline from an accredited institution of higher education.
- A minimum of ten (10) years of effective leadership in student success with proven results related to student retention and graduation rates.
- Experience in higher education advising, programming, and retention related initiatives.
- Doctorate degree from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated success in improving program and service delivery and increasing student retention and graduation rates.
- Knowledge of student information systems such as Jenzabar.
