The Painting Program of the School of Art at the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts at the University of Houston is now accepting applications for a nine-month non-tenure track Scholar in Residence at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts for the 2024-2025 academic year. The successful candidate will teach a 1/1 course load, vigorously pursue their creative/scholarly research, and be an active participant in both CWMCA and the Painting Program.

The Mitchell Scholar in Residence is an honored award to a post-graduate candidate of the highest caliber in their respective field. The Scholars are supported by the Mitchell Center for the Arts to engage in interdisciplinary inquiry methods and dialogue, consult and collaborate with faculty, students and schools across the UH campus. The Scholars are expected to engage with the programs of the Mitchell Center and the ideal candidate is one whose practice/research is aligned with the mission of the Mitchell Center for the Arts. Teaching should cross over to Interdisciplinary Arts courses in addition to those in their discipline.

Salary Stipend: $45,000/annually
Teaching load: 1/1
9-month appointment with potential for renewal

Applicants must work in two or more artistic disciplines OR have clear interdisciplinary research interests they wish to pursue during the residency. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community work has prepared them to contribute to our commitment of academic and artistic excellence.

The Scholar in Residence in Painting is open to artists, curators, critics, and art historians with demonstrated research centered in contemporary painting, drawing, and printmaking, and an interest in intersectional studies that may include, for instance, critical analysis, philosophy, or pedagogy.
  • Create and execute an event, research, exhibition or performance during the residency

  • Attend monthly meetings during the academic year with the Director of Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center and cohort of fellow Scholars

  • Attend CWMCA events, and serve as community ambassadors for the Mitchell Center

  • Must be in residence in Houston for the 9-month appointment

Qualifications :

Must have terminal degree in hand at the start of appointment (either MFA or PhD in Creative Writing).
