The Metadata Strategies Librarian will join our Acquisitions and Metadata team in providing essential services to connect our researchers and learners with the information resources they need to succeed. Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions and Metadata Services, this position serves a critical role in developing and contributing policies, standards and services that enhance the discovery of ASU Library’s extensive collection of print and digital resources.

Working collaboratively with ASU Library staff and community stakeholders, the Metadata Strategies Librarian will lead efforts to adopt and implement linked data initiatives, maximize the use of technology and emerging standards to foster workflow efficiency and innovation, and coordinate metadata development, transformation, and repurposement projects.

Essential Functions:

  • Leads and coordinates the development of linked data policies and workflows to enhance access and discovery to the Library’s collections.
  • Evaluates and implements emerging applications and metadata standards with the goal of continually improving metadata quality and fostering workflow efficiency and innovation.
  • Develops and implements metadata remediation and repurposement initiatives to support current and future discoverability objectives. Gathers and analyzes data with the objective of enhancing metadata design and production.
  • Creates and manages metadata for print, electronic and digital resources using Resource Description and Access, MARC, BIBFRAME, linked data, and non-MARC standards. Coordinates metadata transformation, normalization, and enhancement projects.
  • Utilizes technology to enhance data quality, data management, and interoperability between the library’s current and future systems and platforms.
  • Applies scripting and programming expertise to enhance production needs for metadata creation, enhancement, and maintenance.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in Acquisitions and Metadata, Licensed Collections, Technology Services, Distinctive Collections, Digital Collections Curation, Library Analytics, and other library units to address metadata and discoverability problems, concerns, and questions.
  • Participates in the creation, development, and implementation of unit and team policies and procedures; helps set unit/team goals and priorities within the framework of the ASU Library goals and priorities, and assists in the creation, development, and maintenance of tools and resources used by Acquisitions and Metadata staff.
  • Provides training to staff in Acquisitions and Metadata Services and other library staff. May also directly supervise one or more staff and/or student employees.
  • Performs and/or manages other responsibilities as assigned.


  • Participates in professional contribution and service activities.



  • Masters degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program by the hire date
  • Knowledge of current and emerging standards, workflows, and best practices related to discovery, metadata, and/or cataloging services


  • Experience with linked data, Bibframe, and/or RDF
  • Minimum of one year of metadata and/or cataloging experience
  • Experience with metadata transformation, remediation, normalization, and/or interoperability initiatives
  • Experience with RDA, MARC, non-MARC standards, controlled vocabularies, and/or ontologies.
  • Experience with linked data editors such as Sinopia and/or Marva
  • Experience with developing policies, procedures and/or workflows
  • Experience with data modeling or similar processes
  • Experience with scripting and/or programming languages
  • Experience working with Alma ILS and/or Primo discovery service
  • Experience with adapting to rapid change and demonstrating creativity and initiative
  • Experience working collaboratively with staff, administrators, and other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in the utilization of artificial intelligence in the library environment

Salary and Rank: This is a Continuing Appointment track Academic Professional position; Assistant/Associate Librarian rank and salary dependent upon experience.
