The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University seeks applications for a 12-month tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Neurology. This position will be housed in the Department of Clinical Sciences located on the Veterinary Health Campus of Colorado State University. The neurology service at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a broad array of diseases that either primarily or secondarily affect the nervous system. The Neurology service has high-quality facilities, a strong clinical caseload, and a great support team. The Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a well-equipped, full service veterinary referral hospital. The Neurology Service currently consists of two full-time board-certified faculty neurologists, three neurology residents, and two full-time neurology technicians. Clinical facilities include fully equipped surgical suites supporting spinal cord, vertebral column, and intracranial procedures, minimally invasive surgical equipment, brain biopsy and stereotactic neuronavigational capabilities. A linear accelerator is on-site for performing fractionated IMRT and stereotactic radiation therapy. Advanced diagnostic imaging facilities on-site include fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, nuclear medicine, helical CT scanner, PET, and 1.5 and 3 Tesla MRI.

The Neurology Clinical Trials Service is located on the main floor of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The space, approximately 500 square feet of newly remodeled laboratories, offers an exam room, procedure room, holding kennels for out-patients, and a shared workspace for the technicians, research interns, post-doctoral fellows, and Master’s/PhD students. The neurology clinical trials team is composed of two faculty neurologists, a Clinical Trials Coordinator, a Technician Supervisor, two neurology technicians, a Lab Supervisor, a neurology research intern/Master’s student, and two PhD students. Currently, the Neurology Clinical Trials Service, through federal and non-federal awards and donor gifts, is leading 13 active translational clinical trials with client-owned animals afflicted by naturally occurring diseases, including epilepsy, brain tumor, and aging research. The service sees close to 100 new canine patients yearly for trials and over 900 appointments annually. The team supports an active biorepository, collecting and biobanking samples from all clinical trials cases, as well as harvesting postmortem brain tissue, muscle, and other biospecimens.

Colorado State University’s Translational Medicine Institute is a brand new 130,000 square foot high-tech innovation hub located adjacent to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, with the vision of bringing together academicians, inventors, and entrepreneurs to discover and deliver translational research to improve the lives of animals and humans. It houses a Siemens Skyra 3T MRI scanner with anatomical and functional MRI capabilities. Additionally, the TMI houses state-of-the-art laboratories and a cognitive testing facility (led by Dr. McGrath). The cognitive facility is a modern 112 square foot room solely dedicated to Dr. McGrath’s canine cognitive testing, including equipment, storage, tripods and cameras.
