Job Summary:Performs varied paralegal work involving a moderate level of difficulty to assist and support the College’s General Counsel and Secretary of the College, and other members of the division. This includes drafting and reviewing a wide variety of documents, including agreements, contracts, deeds, leases, resolutions, votes, certificates, reports, policies, and statutory filings and forms as well as pleadings, motions, affidavits, and other general litigation documentation. The position also requires strong legal research skills as well as factual research, data compilation and analysis, and under supervision, conveying routine legal information to stakeholders. Little travel is expected for this position. Any travel will primarily occur during the business day. Hybrid (remote) work arrangements will be considered.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists and supports the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel.
  • As specifically directed by General Counsel or their designee, conveys routine information regarding legal issues associated with existing or proposed operational situations.
  • Conducts routine and specific legal and factual information research and data compilation, as directed by members of the division.
  • Drafts, reviews and revises transactional and litigation documentation, including contracts, agreements, real estate and business transactional documents, pleadings, memoranda, policies, motions and resolutions.
  • Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes.
  • Investigates facts of active cases to support the Office of General Counsel.
  • Communicates with various lawyers, paraprofessionals and others in legal offices involved in matters with the College.
  • Prepares, compiles, reviews, and organizes evidence and other information for internal hearings and meetings, as appropriate.
  • Maintains case and contract files.
  • Supports the Office of General Counsel in managing its internship program, including managing the hiring process and supervision of assignments.
  • May represent the General Counsel’s office on internal committees, task forces, and other official meetings.
  • May provide routine paralegal assistance to outside counsel and/or other administrative agencies involved in College litigation, administrative, and/or compliance matters.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in higher education law and in other related areas.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • 3 – 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Familiarity with various office technologies (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, Google Drive, Gmail, etc.) and legal research platforms.
  • Firm understanding and appreciation for attorney-client privilege, confidentiality, and legal ethics.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong critical thinking and evaluation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Exceptionally strong writing skills, combined with an ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Reasonable familiarity with basic business transactions, including documents, agreements, contracts, resolutions, votes, certificates, real estate and business association documents and materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and client relationship/”people” skills.
  • Ability to produce work of excellent quality under pressure/time constraints.
  • Basic understanding of the Maine and federal judicial systems, and general litigation practice.
  • Ability to draft and review litigation documents, such as pleadings, motions, affidavits, memoranda, and briefs.
  • Strong legal research skills, including developing, designing, and conducting research without detailed supervision.
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills with an ability to prioritize projects under time-sensitive circumstances
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions, including strong interviewing skills.
  • Ability to partner, collaborate, and work with non-legal personnel, including College students, faculty and staff to convey legal concepts and issues and develop and advance the legal requirements of the College.
  • Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
