Position Summary:

The Laboratory Manager position reports to the Associate Director at the Environmental Research and Innovation Center (ERIC). The ERIC is a state-of-the-art research and testing lab that offers a full range of water, renewable energy, and compost testing capabilities. The Lab Manager will support and oversee the laboratory students working at the Environmental Research and Innovation Center. The Lab Manager will also provide clients with project reports and manage client research and development projects. A. Field Sampling and Remote Project Duties (35%)

  1. Conduct site visits as needed by current projects including TNCs and TRHs
  2. Interact with clients and facility owners as needed
  3. Complete required paperwork and reporting for site visits

B. Laboratory Duties (35%)

  1. Train new student laboratory assistants and staff. Update training program as needed
  2. Oversee laboratory assistants working in the lab on a day-to-day basis
  3. Schedule student work hours for weekends and special projects
  4. Develop and implement new laboratory policies and procedures
  5. Develop and implement new laboratory methods
  6. Update and maintain standard operating procedures for all laboratory tests
  7. Perform routine equipment maintenance

C. Reporting and Project management (20%)

1. Manage ERIC client research or testing projects and serve as a contact for clients
2. Assist in development and approve project reports for clients
3. Schedule analysis of samples to meet project deadlines

D. University Service and Outreach Activities (5%)

  1. Perform laboratory tours for clients and potential students
  2. Assist with mentorships, internships, and job shadowing for high school, technical college, and college students
  3. Attend University committee and information sessions as needed.

E. Other duties as assigned (5%)


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelors of Science Degree (Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Water Resources, or related field)
  • Prior experience reviewing and/or writing project reports or technical materials
  • Ability to lead student laboratory assistants
  • Skilled proficiency to conduct laboratory analysis of a wide-range of samples
  • Knowledge of analytical equipment and previous experience operating this equipment
  • Knowledge of scientific sampling methods.
  • Knowledge of MS Office software applications (e.g. Word, Excel)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Attention to detail and task oriented

  • Experience working with a variety of environmental sampling and analysis techniques
  • Chemistry and/or biology laboratory experience
  • Experience with laboratory software (LIMS) a plus
