The vision of the Memphis Literacy Institute (MLI) is to educate and advocate so that every school in Memphis would implement research-based best practices and be equipped for literacy success such that every student in Memphis would experience the dignity and equity of reading on grade level.  The Memphis Reading Clinic (MRC), as an emerging program of MLI, will support the Memphis Literacy Institute’s vision by establishing a deep set of literacy resources for the benefit of Memphis’ students, families and teachers, with special attention offered to our city’s most underserved population. 

As part of a growing and innovative organization, the Memphis Reading Clinic Director will be responsible for leading the exploration and identification of key program and operational elements of a new Memphis Reading Clinic. MRC will be a  year-round student intervention and teacher training clinic that will provide:

  • Diagnostic / screening services for Memphis students
  • Literacy intervention services for students with reading needs
  • Teacher training center and clinical exposure for Memphis teachers / leaders

     

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in education or related field strongly preferred
  • Previous experience with research design, implementation, and continuous improvement
  • Experience engaging across stakeholder groups
  • Previous experience developing, leading and supervising a team
  • Appropriate licenses, training certifications, and measures of content knowledge in the field of literacy
  • Minimum of five years experience in high-needs education preferred
  • Track record of success as a literacy teacher, literacy-specific instructional coach, or instructional leader
  • Experience designing and implementing student interventions
  • Experience analyzing multiple sources of student data in literacy
  • Experience determining and delivering literacy intervention through MTSS
  • Experience serving students with identified reading or language difficulty
  • Goal driven, self-reflective, and analytic problem solver
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to grow and sustain relationships that advance equity and foster co-learning

     

Responsibilities:

Community-facing work

  • Foster community engagement with families and local stakeholders to cultivate community-connected partnership 
  • Conduct community landscape analysis in order to outline the strengths, resources, and needs of the Memphis community, specifically related to literacy and student services
  • Use the community landscape analysis to ensure program initiatives are embedded in the needs of the community.
  • Collect qualitative and quantitative data to define necessary inputs, benchmark outputs, and desired impact.  
  • Source, share, and translate evidence and data of relevance to involved stakeholders
  • Serve as Memphis Reading Clinic representative and community advocate

 

Operational and Logistical Leadership

  • Develop a comprehensive timeline and plan for the launch and opening of the Memphis Reading Clinic 
  • Design and execute systems that support adequate student enrollment to support program outcomes
  • Administer assessments and recommend programs to address identified needs evidenced by assessments
  • Educate parents about student assessments and progress
  • Support  business operations 
  • Lay groundwork for long-term operation, logistical and facility needs 

 

Program Design, Development, and Implementation

  • Develop a culture of ongoing analysis, alignment, and action focused on advancing the mission of the clinic
  • Design and manage student services
  • Serve as an instructor in the clinic
  • Lead instructional work, including  any training, mentoring, and management of clinical instructors
  • Coordinate with Professional Learning Lead to implement clinic-based professional learning
  • Read, attend professional development, take coursework, etc. to stay continuously updated in the field
  • Support MRC advancement through research, grant writing, proposal development, etc.

 

General MTR/MLI Staff Requirements

  • Attend identified required events
  • Build relationships with MLI-served schools and teachers
  • Aware and supportive of MTR core values 

     

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience ($80,000 - $85,000)
  • Competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, HRA, IRA, life, and paid time off

     

Schedule

  • Year round, salaried, full-time position
  • Local travel and some after-hours events required
