Responsibilities:
The Noncredit (NC) program at Southwestern College (SWC) serves a range of adult learners, and minimally some high school youth. Approximately 60% are older adult students exclusively taking older adult designated courses (e.g. wellness classes and lifelong learning such as Tai Chi and Art Therapy), but there are also older adults represented in the other noncredit student categories. NC students benefit from ready, no-cost access to courses and programs centered around basic skills, career exploration/workforce readiness, college prep and student success skills, career education (formerly CTE) and ESL courses /programs. NC courses are frequently the first point of access for our South Bay community populations who are among the most underserved and underrepresented in higher education and within higher-level workforce positions. Additionally, utilizing NC educational opportunities removes any negative impact for credit students who might otherwise be reluctant to take such courses in the credit program due to concerns about unit/course load, GPA, and expending financial aid or personal funds on non-degree applicable/nontransferable courses. As the SWC noncredit program grows, courses and programs are also coming into alignment with the credit program and will create specific pathways to the credit program as well as expanded training for the workforce directly from noncredit.

Southwestern College is seeking one Part-Time Counselor position assigned to the Continuing Education department under the direction of the Director of Continuing Education, providing service to noncredit students and to serve noncredit students.

Adjunct assignment is up to 21 hours a week for 16 weeks for a maximum 336 hours, based on available NCSSSP funding. The standard work week for counselors are twenty-one (21) hours, including direct student contact and departmental activities and collegial governance. Student contact is defined as any counseling activity in which counseling service is provided to a student or students, including correspondence, instruction, workshops, individual or group counseling. The expectation is that (21) hours will be on campus, virtual, or at off-site locations.
The person selected for this position will provide educational, career, and personal counseling and related activities to noncredit students during morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend hours at the Southwestern College California Adult Education Program (CAEP) Office, virtual, or off-site location. In addition, the person selected for this position will collaborate and work with the Continuing Education lead faculty/CAEP Coordinator on student service activities related to the California Adult Education Program. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:(E) = Essential Job Function

● Provide education, career, and personal counseling, and academic/career advising. (E)● Conduct outreach, orientation sessions and participate/support in the studentregistration/onboarding process. (E)● Develop and facilitate workshops and make classroom presentations. (E)● Interpret individual and group academic and career assessments and exploration. (E)● Keep abreast of changing degree and certificate information (credit and noncredit) inorder to advise students about the most current opportunities. (E)● Plan and assist with events to support the transition of students from noncredit to creditprograms and to the workforce. (E)● Participate in curriculum development, scheduling, program review, assessment ofstudent learning outcomes(?), and other activities as requested. (E) ● Collaborate with noncredit and credit colleagues including staff, faculty andadministrators. (E)● Participate on the California Adult Education Program (CAEP) South Bay/SouthwesternConsortium advisory committee as a resource member.● Understand and advocate for access to basic needs resources for eligible SSSP noncreditstudents.● Make referrals to community agencies and other Southwestern College departments.● Interface with Act as liaison with district high schools, adult schools, colleges, and thecommunity.● Contribute to the Continuing Education newsletter and flyers.

Knowledge and Abilities:


Education and Experience:


Minimum Qualifications: (Faculty and Academic Administrator Positions Only)
Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling
OR
the equivalent.

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline).

Desirable Qualifications:
Completion of at least nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to adult learner population OR Completion of six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college noncredit or CAEP program or in a program serving adult learner population AND
Two years of experience in delivering information workshops on topics related to student outreach, onboarding, and student success
Bilingual in any language

Salary
$57.08 to $67.33 per lab hour. Finalized Salary Placement is based on units beyond a bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree conferred.

As soon as the successful candidate is identified and following the subsequent governing board approval.
