The Area Coordinator (AC) for Residence Life and Operations is a twelve-month, live-in staff member in the Office of Student Life in Hickory, NC, with occasional responsibilities in residence life at our graduate location in Columbia, SC. ACs are the professional staff members available in the residence halls for student contact, student concern, programming and engagement. The AC serves as a front-line responder in campus emergencies, is sometimes required to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, and works directly with students from diverse backgrounds.

As a student life staff member, the AC will join an experienced, dedicated team that is student-focused and works to promote a safe, welcoming and engaging environment for the campus community. Area Coordinators work with colleagues and the Director of Residence Life to maintain designated residential spaces (200+ students per Area Coordinator), train and supervise Resident Assistant student staff and provide on-call and crisis intervention duties in designated residence halls. To enable on-call responsibilities, each AC is provided with a private apartment with a full kitchen, utilities, cable and internet in a residence hall as part of their compensation package.

The person in this role will be responsible for the following:

Supervision
  • Work with the Residence Life team to select, train, supervise and evaluate RA staff.
Community Development
  • Foster individual and community development by utilizing individual and group advising, staff supervision and training, appropriate role modeling, program development and implementation, performance of administrative functions and participation as a member of the student life staff team.
  • Utilize Raftr to promote community and engagement within residence halls.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with other Area Coordinators and the Director of Residence Life, coordinate the student development and housing component of assigned Residence Halls.
  • Assist with programming within residence halls as needed.
  • Coordinate implementation and management of residential software and development (eRezLife).
  • Coordinate check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Co-create the housing assignment process.
  • Create and maintain Residence Life social media pages.
  • Create, maintain and distribute all digital marketing for residence life.
  • Rotate work schedules with other ACs to reflect Saturday programming, including securing student transportation to local events and activities.
  • Support residence life programs and experiences on LR’s Columbia, SC campus on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist with student retention efforts as needed. Residence life is key to retaining students.
  • Serve on Student Conduct Council.
  • Support the Office of Student Support and Outreach on an as-needed basis.
  • Support residence life programs and experiences in LR’s Columbia, SC location on an as-needed basis.
Crisis Management
  • Respond to emergencies in an efficient and effective manner to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
  • On call responsibility for the campus on a rotating basis with other Residence Life Staff members. This includes providing 24-hour on-call emergency services on a rotating basis. During this time, duties include responding to emergency situations, assisting with life-threatening medical issues and going to the hospital with students should an emergency occur.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life in the formulation of residential policies and procedures.
  • Assist Director of Residence Life in establishing collaborative relationships with campus partners across all campuses.
  • All other duties as assigned by Director of Residence Life.

Required/Preferred Education, Skills, and Abilities
  • Completed bachelor’s degree required. A Master’s degree is a plus but not required.
  • Some experience with social media required.
  • Residence life experience required. Experience with residence hall programming and managing student workers, a plus.
  • Experience with program assessment, especially in student life, a plus.
  • Experience with residential and engagement software (i.e., eRezLife, Raftr, etc.), a plus.
  • Training in crisis intervention, de-escalation, etc., a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism and diplomacy and to work with individuals at all levels of the university.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with a heightened attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills, problem solving and conflict resolutions skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
Reporting
  • Reports to the Director of Residence Life in the Office of Student Life at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Compensation
  • Compensation package includes salary, benefits, private one or two bedroom/one bath apartment in student housing with utilities, cable, internet, free parking and a limited meal plan.
Physical Requirements
  • Some prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
  • Ability to attend and preside over events, lectures and meetings.
  • Ability to travel with students, faculty and staff throughout campus and off campus as needed.
  • Must be able to traverse various athletic grounds and facilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • CPR and First Aid certification are expected.
Work Schedule
  • Standard office hours M-F, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., with rotational and occasional evening and weekend work as needed based on job responsibilities.
  • Ability to be available on-call as part of a rotational schedule with other residence life staff.
  • Subject to change based on university needs, scheduled courses and university growth.
