Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for providing social services to patients and their families by assisting them with personal and environmental difficulties which predispose illness or interfere with obtaining maximum benefits from medical care. Persons in this position work closely with physicians and nursing staff to further their understanding of significant social and emotional factors underlying patient's health problem. They also serve as a resource referral service in advising patients and their families about available community resources.

Preferred Qualifications
Must have the ability to communicate effectively with people of different levels of education. Experience working with a wide variety of ages and social work needs for those ages. Experience working within the Amarillo community with knowledge of and connection to resources available. Must understand the purpose and function of the clinic and learn the policies and procedures. Must have a good understanding of community health, welfare, and social service agencies. Must adhere to the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners Code of Ethics.
Experience within academic medicine setting where interaction may be with a variety of healthcare staff and providers from medical students and residents to advanced practice providers and faculty physicians.

- Serve as liaison between patient, family, medical staff, and outpatient resources to assist with continuation of medical care.
- Refer patient to resources to help with costs of medical care and/or living expenses.
- Serve as information and referral for the community including external entities like Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services.
- Report cases of abuse to the State.
- Ensure required paperwork required by State of Texas is submitted regarding specific incidents.
