Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Director for Fraternity & Sorority Life is responsible for the overall vision, coordination, and management of the UNCW (social) Greek-lettered community. Serves as the primary liaison between the university and our national Fraternity & Sorority Life social organizations and headquarters. Develops programs and initiatives and works with various internal and external constituents in order to enhance the quality of the student social fraternal experience; oversees long and short-range goal and strategic planning, program planning, marketing, expansion and assessment efforts; collects, tracks, and analyzes data and develops and recommends policies, protocols, procedures and educational agendas based on research; develops collaborations with Greek alumni organizations, chapter advisors, community groups and individual fraternities and sororities and their national headquarters; provides leadership and advising on issues unique to the Greek community, on campus Greek programming, and risk and liability management; collaborates with housing officials on community-based housing opportunities for Greek students (“UNCW Greek Village”); works closely with the F&SL staff and Greek student leaders toward unification with the Interfraternity Council ( IFC, 14 chapters), National Pan-Hellenic Council ( NPHC, 4 chapters), United Greek Council (2 chapters) and Panhellenic Council ( NPC, 11 chapters); enables Greek-lettered members to market the positive aspects of Greek Life at UNCW to the surrounding non-Greek community.

Along with the Associate Director and Coordinator(s), advises student leaders on the development and implementation of programs, applicable policies and procedures, risk management practices, leadership development and organizational management. The Director will assist in developing the Greek Village residential experience.

Requires some evening and weekend commitments, especially during fall and spring new member recruitment periods, major campus celebrations such as Homecoming, and Move-in.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Student personnel, Student Development, Educational Administration, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of five years professional experience and demonstrated capability in working with and advising fraternity and sorority student organizations; commitment to the value of student involvement as an experiential learning process; and demonstrated experience in personnel management and fiscal management is necessary.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and history of national Greek-lettered systems and standards; national and regional trends; legal issue affecting the FSL population; and fair recruitment processes are required.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Experience supervising professional staff members.
  • Experience advising with each of these undergraduate councils: National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council, and the Panhellenic Council.
  • Prior experience facilitating training for undergraduate student organizations or employees
  • Significant experience planning and delivering educational and wellness programs for students especially Fraternity and Sorority Life students.
  • Experience managing recruitment software.
  • Prior experience representing the University in town-gown relations and serving as a campus spokesperson for Fraternity & Sorority Life

The Division of Student Affairs consists of 11 functional departments, each of which is responsible for providing a variety of student support, service, and educational programs which are accessible to all members of the university community. The staff members are dedicated individuals known for their passion and commitment to implementing programs and services that affect student development over the course of a lifetime. Student Affairs provides excellent delivery of student services that are responsive to student needs and promotes the quality of life and education both inside and outside the classroom. We build institutional traditions and lifelong affiliations through creative programs, vibrant student organizations, and a living/learning environment built on core values and uncompromising principles. The Division is a leader and primary spokesperson for students.

The Campus Life department supports and gives direction to out-of-classroom learning. Based on the philosophy that learning is not confined to the classroom but is constant and on-going, the mission of the department is to facilitate the educational process by providing a laboratory experience for student growth, and an arena for the development of cultural, social, leadership, and recreational awareness. This is accomplished through the administration of the Fisher Student Center, University Union, Burney Center and Warwick Center and their programs and services, by providing guidance and resources to student leaders and organizations and serving as the campus’ central point of reference regarding leadership development, student activities and organizations, fraternity and sorority life, and service learning and community engagement.

Campus Life also serves as the first point of contact for conference and event planning and assumes the space scheduling coordination function for all campus space (except for academic course scheduling) and works with campus space stewards in various departments throughout campus to ensure timely, coordinated service for all customers
