Summary: The position of Chair is situated as a primary leadership position and with key membership on the Academic Council.  In performing the duties of the position, it is assumed that the Chair will remain student-focused and a faculty advocate, while complying and supporting Keuka College, policies, strategic plan, and procedures and operating within the limitations imposed by the availability of resources. The duties assigned to the Division Chair as similar to his/her Chair colleagues and are grouped under the following major categories:  Administrative Functions, Faculty and Personnel Functions, Liaison Functions, Student-related Functions, and Leadership Functions.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

Administrative Role and Task

The Chair is the chief administrator of the Division and the primary representative of the academic discipline to which he/she belongs.  Among the specific administrative duties for which the Chair is responsible and accountable are:

  1. Communicating (and at times advocating for) departmental needs and desires to Provost;
  2. Communicating and interpreting College and University decisions to the faculty;
  3. Maintaining transparent and constructive communication among specializations within the Department, and encouraging appropriate balance;
  4. Encouraging the development and improvement of the Division’s curriculum.
  5.  Completing faculty teaching schedules and class offerings.
  6. Developing and administering the departmental budget according to CFO’s guidelines.
  7. Coordinating and supervising the departmental programs, reviews, accreditation, and departmental evaluations, and other reviews; 
  8. Cooperating with peer Divisions and Administrative departments to accomplish strategic goals of Keuka College.
  9. Promoting interdepartmental and interdisciplinary cooperation in the development and maintenance of academic programs.

 

Faculty and Human Resource Role and Task

  Among the specific tasks for which the Chairperson is responsible and accountable are:

  1. Exercising leadership in recruiting and retaining capable faculty;
  2. Evaluating faculty performance on Keuka’s four Pillars.
  3. Making recommendations for reappointment, promotion, and tenure.
  4. Facilitating and encouraging grants and contracts from extramural sources;
  5. Promoting faculty professional development and enrichment, and encouraging faculty in their service to the University and the community;
  6. Maintaining faculty morale by preventing and resolving conflicts, and by arranging for the effective and equitable distribution of faculty responsibilities, Inclusive of advising.
  7. Supervising departmental support staff including selection, scheduling, evaluation, and discipline.
  8. Participation on key interdisciplinary committees (i.e. student success, enrollment management).

Student-Related Role and Task

  Among the specific duties for which the Chair is responsible and accountable are:

  1. Coordinating the academic advisement assignments and ongoing process.
  2. Encouraging student clubs and organizations which foster achievement and professional development;
  3. Developing and assuring compliance with processes for resolving student complaints about faculty, courses and/or programs;
  4. Coordinating the informing of special departmental registration and events criteria
  5. Assure that students pursuing programs in the department have available to them appropriate courses to allow satisfactory progress toward their degrees.

Leadership Role and Task

Within the different leadership styles, one might employ for carrying out the duties of the Chair the following are a number of behaviors consistent with Keuka’s leadership culture.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. MBA (Doctorate preferred) in a discipline within the Division of Business Management.
  2. Minimum of five years of full-time faculty experience at a college or university.
  3. Demonstrated interest and understanding of student advising models 
  4. Demonstrated administrative and financial skills relevant to the current Higher Ed environment. 
  5. Demonstrated leadership skills
  6. Interest in the further development of international programming.
  7. Familiarity with the accreditation standards for the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE).
  8. Experience in developing and implementing unit-wide outcomes assessment. 
  9. Familiarity with online and adult-serving delivery models. 
  10. Demonstrated ability to partner with various constituencies throughout the College and navigate an environment with multiple competing interests that balance the needs of students, the division, and the College
  11. Familiarity with writing and/or administering grants preferred.
  12. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  13. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality 
  14. Ability to provide exemplary customer service to all internal and external stakeholders
  15. Ability to work under pressure with a high tolerance for interruptions, and the ability to work with diverse groups of people

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional evening hours/weekends.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
