Job Summary:

The University’s Chief Financial Officer collaborates with the President, the President’s Council, the Board of Trustees, and the university at large in directing and overseeing institutional financial activities while protecting and facilitating the growth of financial and capital assets. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is the senior administrator who is ultimately responsible for maintaining a positive and steady cash flow, maintaining a positive net income, and operating the university’s overall financial health. The CFO is responsible for leading, directing, and continuously updating a disciplined and transparent budget process that aligns with the realities of the university, guiding the university’s investment strategy, and creatively enhancing and rapidly developing new streams of revenue. Overall, the CFO is ultimately responsible for ensuring every level of the university’s profit and loss (P&L), in aggregate and down to the granular program and office levels, operates with a positive income, or profitable. The CFO oversees accounting and fiscal management, external annual financial audits and compliance, business practices and contracts, purchasing, and other support services. The CFO reports directly to the President and oversees the entire finance, accounting, and financial aid operations.

Essential Functions:

  1. Operates and leads with a high level of integrity.
  2. Serve as a financial advisor and partner to the CEO and executive team.
  3. Ownership and stewardship of the university’s profit and loss (P&L) and ensuring a positive P&L position.
  4. Responsible for all financial management and accounting operations.
  5. Develops an in-depth and comprehensive financial analysis back-end infrastructure that allows for immediate, consistent, accurate, and rigorous understanding and analysis of every layer of the university.
  6. Regular (monthly, quarterly, and annually) granular and rigorous financial reporting to each office director, department chair, program director, executive team member, the University President, and Board of Trustees.
  7. Ability to discern and bring forward financially unhealthy areas of the university operation while bringing forth potential solutions to rectify this position.
  8. Willingness and ability to lead every budget area towards financial stability and positive profit and loss (P&L).
  9. Develops and leads an annual university-wide budget process that aligns with the changing fiscal realities of the university.
  10. Possesses the foresight to anticipate financially unhealthy areas down to the granular program and office levels.
  11. Develops and oversees a process that rigorously analyzes the financials of every new and current area of the university requiring financial resources.
  12. Oversees the development, oversight, and management of the organization’s investment plan and the growth of the university’s endowment.
  13. Accepts and fulfills other duties as assigned by the President.

Education and Experience:

  1. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent, Master’s degree preferred.
  2. Minimum of five years of finance or financial management required. Budgetary or accounting experience may be considered as a substitute.
  3. Proven record of building or contributing to the building of a successful business or start-up required.
  4. CFA, CPA, or CMA preferred.
