Research Analyst

Job Summary

We are seeking a Research Analyst who will work across two projects that focus on global antimicrobial stewardship. The work will be performed under the mentorship of two faculty members at the University of Utah: Daniel Leung (Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases) and Melissa Watt (Associate Professor of Population Health Sciences, Division of Health System Innovation and Research). The Research Assistant will get hands-on experience in the administration and execution of NIH-funded global health research, team-science, and protocol development and implementation. The individual will have the opportunity to develop their research skills across multiple methodological approaches, including qualitative research methods and implementation science.

Responsibilities
The Research Assistant will work primarily across two NIH-funded research studies, with additional studies potentially added over time. The individual will have many opportunities to contribute to the scientific process, and can expect authorship commensurate with contribution. The individual should expect to receive on-going mentorship as part of their daily responsibilities. In addition, the supervising faculty will schedule regular mentorship meetings to discuss professional development.

PROJECT 1. Development of clinical decision tools for management of diarrhea of children in high and low resource settings (R01 AI35115, PI Leung, 2022-27)

Diarrheal diseases are the among the leading cause of death in children worldwide. Given that treatment for diarrheal diseases is frequently empiric, based mostly on clinical suspicion for bacterial causes, antimicrobials are overused in management of diarrheal illness worldwide. In high-income countries, diagnostic testing is oftentimes overutilized. Thus, there is a need for clinical decision support tools (CDSTs) for antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship. This study will determine the potential feasibility, utility, and economic impact of an electronic CDST that estimates diarrheal etiology to decrease antibiotic prescription rates. The work is being conducted in three settings: Utah, Bangladesh, and Mali. In each setting, we will conduct qualitative in-depth interviews (IDIs) with patient caregivers and IDIs with health care providers. We will thereafter conduct focus group discussions (FGDs) with health care providers to share and discuss a prototype of the electronic CDST.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for the following tasks in conjunction and with oversight from the faculty investigators:
  • Assist in compilation of grant progress reports to the NIH
  • Develop context-specific study protocols, unique for the three study settings
  • Conduct qualitative interviews and focus group discussion with clinicians and patient caregivers in Utah
  • Develop training materials in qualitative methods for the partners in Bangladesh and Mali
  • Lead the qualitative analysis of the data, including memo writing and coding in qualitative software
  • Ensure the timely and efficient conduct of the study, responding to challenges that may arise
  • Contribute to other grants resulting from study findings (e.g., literature searches, figure generation).



PROJECT 2. A mobile health tool to improve antibiotic stewardship among village doctors in Bangladesh (PI Leung, R21 HD109819, 2022-27)

In rural Bangladesh, village doctors are typically the first point of contact for children with diarrhea, and are a significant source of antibiotics. In this application, we are working with our partners in Bangladesh (icddr,b) to adapt and pilot test an electronic CDST to support these rural health care providers in the management of pediatric diarrhea. We will conduct the study in two phases: in the first phase, we will adapt the electronic CDST via a user centered design process, and in the second phase we will evaluate the tool using a cluster-randomized pilot study.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for the following tasks in conjunction and with oversight from the faculty investigators:
  • Assist in compilation of grant progress reports to the NIH
  • Develop and monitor the study protocol, together with partners at icddr,b
  • Support the icddr,b study team in the mapping and surveying of village doctors, and the collection of in-depth interview and focus group data
  • Lead the qualitative analysis of the data, including memo writing and coding in qualitative software
  • Ensure the timely and efficient conduct of the study, responding to challenges that may arise
  • Contribute to other grants resulting from study findings (e.g., literature searches, figure generation).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field, or equivalency, plus two years of related experience. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.
  • A valid Utah Driver’s License may be required in certain departments.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
